Updated to the most recent version of MPC-BE and immediately after updating discovered it had lost my entire recent files history. This isn't behavior one would typically expect as a result of updating an app. And it's a serious problem due to losing your place in all partially watched videos, no longer being able to reference which videos you have or haven't watched, etc. Reporting it here in the hope a solution can be found to avoid this issue during future updates. TIA
Did you happen to set it as your default within Windows and run it by double clicking files or similar? The last time you ran it before an upgrade, did you shutdown Windows before closing the app?
I checked the app and it does appear that if the settings files remain within the App directory, they will be lost on upgrade. This can occur if either of the two situations mentioned above happen. If you want to associate files with HPC-BE Portable, you can use a third party utility to associate the HPC-BEPortable.exe launcher. Ensure you properly shut down portable apps before turning off or restarting your PC.
I've fixed the installer preservation configuration to also act as a backup to preserve the settings on improper association or shutdown.

It is set as the default within Windows; however, it is setup using the portable launcher. Which, from your post, seems like the correct way. There was no improper shutdown prior to the upgrade. I always exit the app when not in use and, in fact, it's even set to automatically exit upon playback end.
Therefore, I do not know how to explain the loss of the recent files history. And, just to clarify, it did not lose settings (for example, player options, key bindings, etc.) I mention this in case it helps with diagnosis.
In any case, it sounds like the update you implemented should hopefully prevent the problem from recurring. Thank you!
Seems MPC-BE's devs changed where the file history is stored to make it different from MPC and MPC-HC for some odd reason. I've updated the launcher and added custom code to the installer to handle it on next upgrade for existing users.
