Errors Writing Documents Folder macOS Helper 1.2 + PortableApps.com Platform

Well, Hello, There,

I am seeing errors writing to Documents folder (i.e., Desktop.ini) although my user has read and write to the Documents folder.
I open the PortableAppsMacHelper.app from the Documents folder and it just says "Can't Write ~/Documents/Desktop.ini".

Anybody seeing the errors as well?

Thank you.

Best,

Hoa

Documents Prompt?

Did you get the macOS access prompt? It should pop up a "PortableAppsMacOSHelper.app would like access to your Documents folder" prompt as it installs for you to click Approve on.

Reply To: Documents Prompt?

No, I did not get the macOS access prompt. It did not pop up the required Approval prompt.

(Update notes on my previous post: Confirmations: Quarantine fix completed successfully. I am running macOS Ventura 13.3)

Thank you for the support.

Please Try This

If it fails. Please try deleting the app and redownloading a fresh copy and performing the steps again. If that fails, please try the same but this time after extracting it to Documents, rename it to PortableAppsMacHelper2.app and then do the quarantine fix with the adjusted name. I'm not sure why this occurs yet but I'm hoping it's related to it not being signed which I may be able to get sorted this week now that I got us approved with Apple.

Tried Scenarios Suggested Still Does Not Work

I did tried the scenarios suggested but I still cannot get the installation to work properly as I am still seeing write errors to the Documents folder.
There might be something else that is missing as the approval prompt is still not popping up. It seems it is better to wait for the official approved app as using any other methods (i.e., gatekeeper) is undesirable.

Thank you.

Just Got Back

I just got back a bit after 2am this morning from caring for my dying father in Florida. I'm hoping to have some time this week before I go back again next week.

Try Signed Version

Please try the signed version I just posted: https://github.com/PortableApps/MacHelper/releases/tag/1.2

I'm not sure if this will resolve anything. And I'm still having an issue with the package being 'unsealed'.

Re: Try Signed Version

Thank you, John, for the signed version at GitHub.

I will try and will post updates.

Re: Tried Signed Version It Seems Not Resolve Anything

I tried the signed version at GitHub and you are right.
It did not resolve anything. I am still getting write errors to the Documents folder (i.e., no Approval prompt).

Curiously, if the version is signed I am not sure why I still have to do the quarantine fix.

Thank you.

Best,

Hoa

You Shouldn't

You shouldn't have to do the quarantine fix. I just added the signed version in and haven't changed any instructions.

UPDATE: Turns out signing didn't work. Likely due to the 'unsealed' warning, which doesn't tell you what isn't sealed nor how to address it. Apple's code signing is just awful.

If anyone knows anyone with some experience that could advise, please let me know.

Notarization

Looks like part of the issue is that I didn't also setup notarization. After you sign it in a specific way with your Apple-supplied developer ID you have to submit your application to Apple for notarization and then 'staple' that notarization to your app. I'm going to set this up as time permits.

Same problem here, tried all

Same problem here, tried all the steps and get the error regarding the "not show" of the popup requesting permission to write files.

Also read about the recent loss of your father and was sincerely sad. Please accept my warmest condolences
Just commented to get posted on new replies regarding the solution.
Thank you once again for your kind contribution!

The following disk images couldn't be opened.

Good day,
I hope all are doing well.

I did the following steps to mount the image:
- Double-click on the 'PortableApps.com macOS Helper 1.2'.

However, an error message appeared stating:
"The following disk images couldn't be opened."
Reason : No Mountable file systems
Here is a screenshot of the issue:https://pasteboard.co/yxoKgPa59LnZ.png.

I have attempted to install different versions of macOS Helper,
but the same warning persists: "The following disk images couldn't be opened."
Reason: No Mountable file systems

Question:
Are all OS X versions be compatible?
For instance, does it function from
Mac OS X 10.0 (Cheetah) through to OS X 10.1 and up to macOS 13.0 (Ventura) ?

If yes… awesome!
With your help, I just need to figure out on how to make this work
Thanks in advance

10.13 and later

It requires macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later according to the WineskinServer folks and is set as such internally. It may require 10.15.4 and later based on some other research I had done.

macOS Helper for older version of Mac

Hi,
awww Sad
would it be possible to use an older Old Versions of Wine
that works Mac OS X 10.6
i found one https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/17376/wine/old-versions

macOS Helper 1.2 is built with winery wineskin,
so I know it will work.
Why I say this because
I am currently using an older version of Mp3tag,
which includes the macOS-Wine.app
It worked like a charm

However, it did not come with a DMG file.
Instead, the older Mp3tag with macOS-Wine.app
came in a zip file, which was then I extracted to a folder
containing the Mp3tag app.

Again many thanks to you and your team.

Not Planned

It will be extra build work. I'll have no way of testing it. And it'll be a support nightmare since lots of apps probably won't work right on an outdated version of Wine.

Yes

Yes. As long as it is fully updated. You need to run the Terminal command as detailed on the macOS download page.

Wineskin

Hi John,

Thanks again for your wonderful solution and your commitment.
I missed the solution so much since my work laptop replaced with MacBook.
Great to see that your putting extra effort to make it available on MacOS.
When I tried the MacOS helper, I encountered similar error for the writing while directory name is special characters instead of ~/Documents. (EDIT: Work laptop has OneDrive Sync and hence the special path prefix).

Hope my experience may help.
Currently, I installed the platform with Wineskin that used the formal Windows Executables (not the mac helper).
Wineskin provided the function to install program while it stated that '*note: When installing software, always install it to the C: drive'.
Thus, installed the platform on 'C:' worked for me and I have installed some apps that work quite well.

Thanks again and have a lovely day.

Wilson
