Does anyone know where I could find an uncompressed copy of "Thunderbird Portable with Enigmail and GPG 1.5.0.9 en-us?"
When I run "Thunderbird_Portable_with_Enigmail_and_GPG_1.5.0.9_en-us.paf.exe" it crashes every time with "7z SFX has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I had the same problem with "Thunderbird_Portable_with_Enigmail_and_GPG_1.5.0.8_en-us.paf.exe"
I think that avoiding the self-unzipping file all together would be easier.

Whenever you encounter an issue like this, it's one of two things. Either the file was corrupted in transit, in which case it doesn't matter what kind of file it is, it's not gonna work. Or, there is an issue with your computer.
Check the file's MD5 sum to be sure you got the whole file. Use something like WinMd5Sum to check it. The md5 sums are published right on the TBP page.
99.9% of the time, it's due to missing a small piece of the file. And, like I said, it has NOTHING to do with it being 7-zip compressed. Even if it was a ZIP or a regular NSIS-based EXE installer, it still would not work. This is usually due to a flakey internet connection or a mirror on SourceForge's network having a corrupt copy. You can claim it's due to the self-extractor if you would like... but it's simply not the case.
The other 0.1% of the time, it's due to a PC issue. In these cases, the PC is usually so far gone that a reinstall of Windows is recommended.

I downloaded a fresh copy and compared the file to the Md5sum which check out fine, but it still crashes. As I said before, I had the same problem with 1.5.0.8 in the self extracting file. I deleted it and re-downloaded it several times, but it would still crash.
I didn't realize that it would compressed with 7-zip. I use 7-zip on my system as well and I was wondering if it was an issue with the installed version due to the message.
I have been using Thunderbird Portable 1.5.0.5 and I didn't have any problems uncompressing it (I think that it was available in a .zip file though).
I finally figured out that I could use 7-zip to open the "Thunderbird_Portable_with_Enigmail_and_GPG_1.5.0.9_en-us.paf.exe" file as an archive and then copy the "ThunderbirdPortable" outside of the archive. There doesn't seem to be any issues.
Is there an important reason why the .zip versions are not available any more from 1.5.0.8 on?

Having 7-zip installed doesn't affect the ability for a 7-zip self-compressed file to run. If it's failing, it is sometimes due to a misbehaving antivirus program. Otherwise, it's something up with Windows itself and there is no known workaround since we don't know what the issue is (I think a grand total of 6 people have reported this over the past 2 years and 18 million apps downloaded).
The apps will be switching to an NSIS-based installer within the next few weeks. Zip versions of the Mozilla apps won't be available going forward. Only binary installers. Much the same way that Mozilla nixed the zip downloads of regular Firefox, Thunderbird and Sunbird quite some time ago. And zip versions of the other apps are doubtful. It means more than double the time to upload. (Zips are quite a bit bigger than 7zs) It's one extra thing to maintain.
