Every update of qBittorrent lose all my settings

It has been three, four or five updates that all my settings and torrents gone after the update! (Except this last time, the torrents remain)

I have a lot of customizations of locations to download files, tags, temporary, watching folders etc.

Any one with this issue too?

What I have to do to keep all my settings?

Download File Update

This specific update reset the Download and Logs locations due to a previous issue with portablization. Your other settings should be preserved. Are you properly closing when you're done with the app? Are you only running it from the qBittorrentPortable.exe launcher or PA.c Platform?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Possible Related Issue

Hey John,

I've noticed this as well, although I think I might have stumbled upon at least part of what is going on.

There are two .exe files associated with qBittorrent:

1) qBittorrentPortable.exe located at \PortableApps\qBittorrentPortable
2) qbittorrent.exe located at \PortableApps\qBittorrentPortable\App\qBittorrent

For whatever reason, these are being treated as separate instances of qBittorrent. In other words, qBittorrentPortable.exe is not acting like a simple shortcut to qbittorrent.exe. So when there's an update, data and settings associated with qBittorrentPortable.exe resets, but data and settings associated with qbittorrent.exe persists.

I believe you can verify this by installing a previous version, launching each .exe separately, and adding a different torrent to each. You can close and reopen them, and see separate data in each one. If you then update, the data associated with the larger .exe file persists, but the data associated with the smaller .exe file seems to vanish.

Hope that helps.

How Launching?

How are you launching it? If you pin qBittorrent to your taskbar or start menu when it's running via the taskbar, you're bypassing the qBittorrentPortable.exe launcher. It's required as it moves settings into the registry on launch, waits for qBittorrent.exe to complete, then moves them back out. You can pin it to the taskbar via the PA.c Platform which makes a special kind of shortcut to ensure Windows understands that it's two EXEs.

No pinning of any kind.

No pinning of any kind. Originally I only launched it from the PA launcher, just like any other app. After an update or two where data disappeared, I noticed that launching qbittorrent.exe directly from the /App directory launched a version that was not missing data (the old data was still there). So I've been doing that for the time being.

But other than double-clicking one .exe instead of the other, nothing special.

Local Mode

Running qBittorrent.exe is the same as running the installed version. All your data is stored in the registry. This will also happen if you associate qBittorrent.exe with torrents or magnet links from within qBittorrent.

That may very well of been

That may very well of been what happened; it's quite possible that I associated .torrent or .magnet from within the qBittorrent preferences menu.

Given the odd behavior (seemingly two versions running in parallel) are there any dos or don'ts you would want to call out in terms of configuring this properly to avoid these issues? Just want to make sure I'm not accidentally working against anything you're trying to do with the portable version and the launcher.
