PSPad 4.52 instead of Notepad++ etc.

I have stumbled across this multilanguage text editor today and think it is much better than Notepad++ or Scite, one of which should become part of the PAS soon.

Why not contact the author of PSPad - which is freeware I guess and already portable - and make it part of the PAS instead?

Nah

It's not open-source plus Notepad++ is portable already.

PSPad is also portable

PSPad is also portable already. It just isn't PAFed.

I thought I updated that post

I realised that, but I forgot to press submit obviously.
Last time I checked, it had a restrictive license, so I couldn't package it.

Mail Jan Fiala. I think

Mail Jan Fiala. I think you'll get his permission.

either way

Sourceforge wouldn't allow Jonh to host the portable version here. It is good as a possibility though. I think Jan Fiala could make a portableapps package himself and host it in his own site.

I just don't get the reason of a person making a program freeware but not open source. But hey just a complaint.

this

It is a good editor although it kind of seems to target into being an IDE. After a lot of wandering I still cannot get how to make it highlight other languages.

Under Settings - Highlighter

Under Settings - Highlighter Settings
There are 5 unassigned highlighters at the bottom of the list. Select one and you can assign one a list of unused highlighters.

Jan Fiala made a portable

Jan Fiala made a portable package..the default one. As it is portable, why should he change his directory structure for one that was not designed for already portable apps?

Wink

I'll send out an email tonight or tomorrow and see. If I can, I'll just do a simple stub launcher.

My only editor...

I have used PSPad for a couple of years, and it is the only piece of software that is open on my machine all the time. I have always used it portably, the program settings let you determine how much real interaction the program has with your system. You have the choice of writing settings to the program folder or the registry. It has a regex extension, built in FTP client, spell checking, and syntax highlighting which covers everything I normally use such as php, SQL and FoxPro, best of all you can define your own! Some of the most useful features are the ability to auto-complete, and tie into external help files, so while I am developing a FoxPro program or PHP script I have the syntax and ALT-F1 on a keyword opens the PHP or whatever help file for that keyword. You can also setup templates for various file types, and modify them at will. Column select and insert, sorting, tabs, search and replace across files, and some other things like Hex editor and color pickers make it the only program I need for a lot of my work!

Notepad++

does everything PSPad does except having a built in FTP client.
I use it for everything and when you are writing something such as a PHP script, you can open a list of functions.
Plus, it's open source.

To me PSPad appears to be

To me PSPad appears to be more solid and advanced compared to Notpad++. And something else of interest, at least for a non-english user: The translation is better by far.

Just my 5 cent...

Spell Checker
  • Spell Checker
  • New file templates
  • Files comparison
  • Hex mode (not sure if N++ doesn't have it)
  • Many small, but nice things like sorting or HTML preview.

  • N++ has one if you enable it
  • I'm fairly sure N++ can have those.
  • N++ supports multiple documents in multiple panes.
  • N++ includes a Hex mode
  • HTML Preview is useless since it uses IE, N++ can launch Firefox or IE with a quick hotkey.

Ok, forget about the options

Ok, forget about the options it has which I didn't find.
But multiple documents in multiple panes is nothing like comparison. Try to do this with 2 very similar logs that have > 10 MB.
Of course, PSPad can also launch FF or IE. But it's slower. And does N++ support relative paths for them?

There's also a matter of preferences. There are people who just don't like N++ Wink

Yep

Good point Wink
But I prefer to have a better Closed Source program.
And for similar reason I'm leaving PSPad for payware - TextPad. I just have to make a launcher Wink
