Troubleshooting Frequent Crashes

Hello.

First let me say love Portable apps, I have been a diligent user for five years now.

In the last two months I have been experiencing random crashes. I hope someone can guide me into troubleshooting this problem.

There is no error message or dialog that appears, it is instantaneous and without warning. I have enabled logging within the Portable apps options (Advanced tab -> Log platform events to a text file), however the only messages logged were all prior to the crash. Unfortunately the log clears when I restart the platform, I will try keep a backup of the log next time this occurs.

The most frustrating part of this is that all the apps I had open are also closed when the platform crashes. If all the apps stayed open then the problem would not be as severe, but as it stand this has the risk of losing work. This happens about once or twice a week.

Should try revert to an older version to see if stability improves? What can I do to troubleshoot the problem?

System Specs:
Windows 11 (version 23H2 OS Build 22631.3880 64-bit Edition)
.NET Framework: 4.8/ .NET Core: - / .NET: 6, 7, 8/ Java: 1.8 x64
Platform version 29.5.3 JPE 1704 TKS

If Platform Related, it's easier to recreate a new one than to exhume the issue's roots.

  • New installation → Move older app folders (except the PortableApps.com one) to the new platform → Reconfigure & make test!

Otherwise, if it persists. It may be Hardware/OS related.

I followed your advice and

I followed your advice and removed the old app folders and reinstalled the latest. The platform crashed again since then, yesterday.

I have started running apps from explorer instead of the Platform menu, as the instability is causing major frustration when my apps close along with the crash.

Unless anyone can offer additional advice, I am going to roll my Portable apps back to older versions to try identify the last known stable version.
