Hi,
Thunderbird 115 Portable is around, but with horrible changes in its interface.
I do not want to migrate from Thunderbird 102 Portable to the 115 version, but I keep getting very frequent pop-up messages requesting to upgrade it.
I already tried two procedures to prevent the pop-ups:
I renamed the updater.exe file
and created a policies.json at c:\ThunderbirdPortable\App\Thunderbird\distribution

None of the procedures did the job, the the pop-ups do not stop.
The same page has another procedure, by changing the Windows registry, but as it is portable, I think it does not applies.
What can I do to prevent the pop-ups advising to upgrade to version 115?

I think of another option but it only for pro user.
Thunderbird has advanced settings but you could
crash everything so a good backup is needed.
I think the updater prompts only every 7 days.
So maybe you better let it be.
I think it's better you get the info as you could otherwise
forget later to update when a better version is out.

Yes, I am aware of the risks of edit registry.
That was never my intention.
My understanding is that Thunderbird portable do not even insert any key in registry because portable software are not expected to insert any key or data at registry.
If you're running on a 64-bit machine and have both 32 and 64-bit Thunderbird included, you need to to the policies.json within ThunderbirdPortable\App\Thunderbird64\distribution
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I followed your suggestion.
I created the "distribution" folder inside "Thunderbird64", and copied there a copy of the same "policies.json" I created previously.
Seems it worked!
Since then, about 24 hours ago, I did not seen any new pop-up to upgrade.

UPDATE: After 3 days, still not showing any pop-up anymore. So it is confirmed that works!
Look what John recommends.
If it doesn't help and you don't want to let it be I can give you a bit risky method.
But it's much less risky as touching the registry.
I have to solve some big problems at the moment but will get to you later.
