For everyone’s information: The latest Opera update wiped out my most recent session. This I noticed immediately, upon seeing that all my old tabs were gone. From there it started querying me as how I wanted to setup the browser, as it if were an initial installation. Hence there was an evident failure in accessing my whole former profile.
I did get a message at one point about conflicting profiles, but the suggestion about how to resolve it was incomplete. That is, there was no file in the referenced directory that was constructively apropos the issue.
So I replaced the installation with an older backup, which works for now. Hopefully the next update resolves the situation.
How are you launching Opera Portable? Is it only via OperaPortable.exe directly or via the PA.c Platform?

Good question. (Note: The problem persists in this latest update since I made the original post, when I install the update over an older version of PortableOpera with a functioning profile.)
When I directly open OperaPortable.exe (which I have routinely been doing for a very long time) I get the situation described, starting from a blank slate as if it was a new installation. Whereas when I launch it from the PA.com start menu I get this message from the Opera, Portable Edition (PortableApps.com Launcher) applet:
“A duplicate profile was found stored in F:\PortableApps\OperaPortable\App\Opera\profile when attempting to start Opera Portable. This can be due to a failure to close Opera Portable the last time it was used or accidentally running Opera directly by setting it as your default browser. Please ensure that no profile is stored in that location and that the profile you would like to use is within F:\PortableApps\OperaPortable\Data\profile before
continuing. Do not delete either profile until you determine which contains your full profile and which was created accidentally.”
Within OperaPortable\App\Opera\profile there is only the subdirectory "data", no profile file as seemingly declared in the message.
Within OperaPortable\Data\profile there is also a "data" subdirectory. When looking through the "data\Default" subdirectory I find myself at a loss to find where the offending duplicate profile is originating.
If that F:\PortableApps\OperaPortable\App\Opera\profile is empty, delete it or at least move it away from its current location. That's what the launcher is complaining about.

That did the trick. Thank you! I can infer that the issue would have hung around indefinitely absent that fix.
It purposely doesn't delete either. It's asking you to do so because there were data loss issues in the past where folks launched Opera two different ways or had it crash and not recover properly.
