request to anyone who is willing to make frespire 1.0.13 a portible app. go to www.linspire.com and then go to the bottom link that says get freespire then download the open source os and make it portible. i must warn that this is a very large file at 683MB.

Very large?...

Yes, as are nearly all Linux Live CD distros. And we don't "make" it a portable app; the authors RELEASE it as a portable Operating System as-is...

released?

are you sereous?!? it was my understanding that if a non portible application was wanted to be amde into a protible application then you wrote a fiw programs or modified it to work with the portible apps program. and since this program is an open source program it should be easy! not for me thogh,(not yet!!).

p.s.

and also, freespire isnt a linux live cd distro. yes it is based entirely on linux but freespire is compleatly free. you can either download it or have a company burn it to a disc as an iso image. linux has almost nothing to do with the program distro.

Freespire is a Linux distro,

Freespire is a Linux distro, most of which are free, i don't know much about linux, but so far Linspire is the only paid distro i've seen. Freespire is a community maintained, free, offshoot of Linspire, and it does over a live CD version

Plenty of paid distros out there..

While most distros ARE free, Linspire is one paid distro. Also there's Red Hat, Pioneer Linux, and various others whose names I forget at the moment.

"also, freespire isnt a linux live cd distro."...

@ sergentsiler

Not true, that statement, and some of what follows it.

Freespire (and yes, that IS the way it's spelled) *is* a live Linux CD distro. I've used its live CD many times. And it is *free*; no strings attached.

I think your confusion lies in its ties to Linspire. Linspire is a *proprietary* version of Linux; one that you hafta pay for.
However, Freespire is *based on* Linspire, and therein lies the connection betwixt the two.

Anyway, Linspire IS available in a live CD form (I have it, in fact), although that was a limited-time offering.
But, if I remember it correctly, their live CD canNOT be used to install Linspire on your system, you hafta buy the install CDs.
Whereas, I beleive Freespire CAN be installed (or at least there are plans to make it installable w/ the upcoming version 2)

As to "Linux", it is not a proprietary trademark per se. Linux has been - from the beginning - an open-source OS.
And both Freespire AND Linspire are types of Linux distros.
Therefore Linux has "everything" to do with Freespire.

Hope that helps clear things up...

Launchers can be written for

Launchers can be written for open source apps or freeware apps with author's permission, Freespire isn't an application, it is a debian-based linux operating system

srry!!!

well i wasent confused about that. i know that it is an os but technecly speaking, so is Mac-On-Stick! and you dont need the authors permission to modify it anywhay because if you have read anything on the site for more than a half a$$ed second you will see that they say that it IS free to modify and distro at willfor bolth the reguler and the open source only editions!!!!!!!

D00d:

You've never seen frEEspire in a linux live cd? Well, then, you've never "seen" Freespire!

Some places that offer the cd DO 'make it themselves', and send it to you for a small fee, yes (same as most other Linux distros, for that matter). However, you can just as easily "make it" yourself simply by downloading the ISO file.

Go to Freespire.org (that's two E's, then one)

Hit the "click for free download" link.

What you end up downloading is a CD image file (freespire.iso, or somesuch) of some 680+ MB size.

Under Nero, you would select "burn image", then select the ISO you just downloaded, and burn said image to your blank (700 Mb capacity or more) CD/DVD.

Then boot up with same in your CD/DVD drive, with BIOS set to boot from said drive.

There you have it. Freespire. Live. On a CD. Schweet!

Bon appetit.

P.S. - I will say this:
They are rather odd in that their website offers no overt clues to the fact that it comes in a "live" flavor.
Nonetheless, rest assured that it DOES, for I have it right here on my desk, and have used it many times.

thanks but i am not that stupid!

i have already gotten the frespire on a disk but my computer fried before i could get a chance to install it. and i really didnt know that linux actualy distributed it themselves. i have noticed one thing, that everyone is off my back about freespire not being an app. and once again i know that freespire DOES have 2 E'S!!!!
if you dont agree than go to the website and check it yourself!

Um, "huh"?...

Not sure what's up with the "not that stupid" comment.

Anyhoo, a few clarifiers:

1) "linux" doesn't distribute it themselves;, as I'd said before, Linux is not a proprietary entity, it is merely a descriptor for the *type* of OS.

2) That said, Freespire - on the other hand - DOES distributes "it" *them*selves.

3) Freespire is not necessarily an installable distro (I haven't yet tried to, and I'm not likely to); but as stated before, it most definitely IS a "Live" distro.

4) No one's on your back, and only one of us that I recall - namely, me - mentioned anything to you about the app vs. OS issue at all. Once.

5) As to spelling of Freespire, it is *you* that has been misspelling it most of the way along here.
One of your last posts on the subject mentioned that it "might" be spelled with "one less 'e' "; I merely corrected you that 2e's, then 1 e, was in fact the case.

...

Just read through the whole string...

You do realize that Freespire is a OS and not something that will be included here correct? It is Opensource I believe and could potentially be distributed here but there would be no point to that. Even if it is included with Virtualbox, there is still no point.

As with your Mac-on-a-stick reference, both Mac-on-a-stick and Freespire in Virtual box are only emulators. They are not a complete OS like a Linux distro on a USB Key or UBCD4Win or BartPE on a USB Key. Both Mac-on-a-stick and Freespire in Virtual box are just simply files run in a installed running OS and not an OS themselves

Freespire is a OS and not an app. It is already portable with no modifications. Also I think this subject is in the wrong section to begin with... It should have been in the Off Topic section at the bottom of the forums.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you do or say will be exaggerated or mis-quoted and used against you.

Freespire 2

Freespire 2 is out. If you want a portable version the you need the OSS Edition (OpenSource Software Edition) that comes without proprietary codecs.

Then, update your main tread. So that users that don't read the comments can see some of the information (there's an edit button on the top when you go to threads made by you).
