PortableApps Hanging? Maximum Drive Size Issue?

I've got a brand new 256GB Sandisk flash drive. When I install the platform, any time I use the one app that I install (Chrome 64) my system "hangs" for sometimes up to 30 seconds. It's not stable at all.

I've tried partitioning the drive to a 32GB partition for it to run, that did not help.
I've tried formating NTFS, that did not help
I've tried running ExFAT on the whole 256GB (No Partitions) that did not help.

It just seems overall not stable.

I DID run this on an old 16GB drive I had laying around and although I didn't run it very long, I don't remember having any issues with it.

Could the drive size itself be the problem?

I'm running it on Windows 10 currently, but I've run it on a Windows 11 system with the same issue.

I've tested the drive with some freeware, and it passed for capacity and no bad sectors.

Help!! Smile

No Drive Size Issue

There are no issues with drive size. I run it on my 256GB USB pretty frequently. I use exFAT as I routinely move it to and from other OSes. Where did you get the drive from and how did you test it?

I bought it from amazon and

I bought it from amazon and tested it with a couple of "fake drive" tests, I found online. "Validrive" and something else.

If you have suggestions for a better test, I'd appreciate it.

I feel like I should have a good reason before I return the drive... If drive size isn't an issue, I don't know what the problem would be unless the physical drive is bad. I'll try it on my other machines this weekend and see if I have similar issues.

Thanks!

Just an opinion

I had some problems with USB stuff (Disk and SD).
The Windows' built-in formatter didn't help, while third-party softwares like HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool & SD Formatter fixed my (different than yours) issues.

Wow. I'm surprised to hear

Wow. I'm surprised to hear that windows isn't the best at formatting.

I have partitioned this drive and formatted it many many times trying to get it to work. Maybe I should try formatting it on a Linux machine and see if that's any better, or just use that application that you referenced.

Thanks for the tip (even if it wasn't directly related)!!

Seller?

Who was the seller on Amazon? It matters a little bit, but not entirely as Amazon mixes stock sent in from shady third party sellers selling fake drives with legitimate stock obtained directly from the manufacturer.

It was a next day delivery. I guess I didn't even think about it.

Is there a fool-proof test to find out if it's legit?

I just formatted with the HP tool, and I'm going to see how that goes, but I'm still curious if I got some fake drive. The package looked legit as well, and it's one of those "micro" drives with the USB C and USB A ends on it. I would THINK it would be hard to counterfit, but I know anything is possible.

Okay,

Okay,

I'm home now, (Not on my work PC), but I tried the 256GB drive on my desktop (Brand New Windows 11), and my laptop (Windows 11) and they both hung and gave me issues.

At the same time I bought the 256GB drive, I bought a 128GB Drive. I had it setup for a windows recovery disk and it was partitioned for a couple other purposes. I wiped it, created one primary partition and formated it ExFAT. It's screaming fast and working perfectly.

Sandisk Support verified that my 256GB drive is genuine and agreed with me that it is defective if it's acting as I described above. I started an Amazon return and will be sending it back shortly.

I'm not sure I trust Sandisk enough to purchase the same drive again, but I may just because the price is good, I'd really like to have a large flash drive, and I'm very curious whether it was my drive or that model/size drive that has problems.

Thanks to everyone who gave me some suggestions!

Which Drive

It's likely you just happened to get a bad one. Which specific drive did you get btw?
