Due to the recent microsoft announcement that Skype is going away in May 2025):

Is it possible to get Microsoft Teams as a portable app to the repository? Been using Skype for ages as a Papp when I need a quick chat when remote and would not like to lose that functionality.
I am not sure, but is this not part of the operating system anyway?

According to Wikipedia (French), it may be a standalone app or integrated (facultative) within Office 365 . But there are some controversies

no, it's an add-on product. And portable apps can be used under other OS's aside from windows (i.e. I use it under linux for example with Wine on some machines) so you may not have the option (under linux it's PWA so a web app not a fat app) , or really want to install the application (i.e. the point of portable apps is to use applications on other computers where you do not want to make local/registry type changes).
on site of first post in the middle is a further link, try or register free, but after 5 bucks.
no free app, propably not allowed to do portable. skype was free, propably not same case.
i try to help!

this is free, on all my computers the Teams is preinstalled, I never did install anything.
Even on those w10 I updated from w7, teams is here automatically. So far I did not find any computer with w10 or w11 where this was not alrady installed.
The teams works almost the same way, looks very similar.

In my opinion, it's not a good idea to try to portabilize Microsoft Teams.
Anyway there are some links:
Download Microsoft Teams
• Github project: https://github.com/ItzLevvie/MicrosoftTeams-msinternal?tab=readme-ov-file
• 'defconfig' is the repository for daily builds: https://github.com/ItzLevvie/MicrosoftTeams-msinternal/blob/master/defco...
• 'defconfig2' shows all build for Microsoft Teams classic: https://github.com/ItzLevvie/MicrosoftTeams-msinternal/blob/master/defco...
Microsoft Teams Reviews:

• crazyegg blog: https://www.crazyegg.com/blog/microsoft-teams-review/
In conclusion:
• is ideal for these users that intensevely use Microsoft tools
• Teams is designed to support large organizations (up to 10,000 users)
• for users that need video conference, best choice is Zoom

The point to make a portable version of Teams is that it *IS* the replacement for Skype which is portable today and has all accounts moved over. So this is to maintain the same access as what already exists for Skype but for the replacement service (Teams). It is not to switch to another service which is a horse of a different colour. It's to maintain access to the same people/contacts that you already have with the demise of the Skype application and movement to Teams. But in a portable form so that it can be used in the same way.
I can't move 100's of people over to other apps (and whatever their own contact maps are). If I could I would probably use Element (matrix.org) (which unfortunately isn't portable either) due to better security review and open source nature.
It might be possible; check Microsoft Teams portable app community discussions.
not really, via google found a link with description about win, mac, android, something mobile blabla, but the page doesnt say it anymore, so maybe microsoft sees it other way (now). however, just saying.

I think it's an Electron app, so I should be able to portablize it using stuff I've already written

Would be good if there was a Teams portable app. I'm a Skype person myself and I intend to switch to Teams later this year.
i think its a normal step to jump on the webinar and conference train.
skype is a dinosaurus.

I took at look a MS Teams within a virtual machine. While the basic settings and stuff should be able to be portablized, the login credentials are another story. They use the built in Windows MS login abilities. So, as you login it prompts you to choose between using the login everywhere or just in MS apps and then saves it all locally in the standard location.

does anyone know if one can import contacts from skype, like you can sync/add appointments in webcalendars?
its just a feeling or idea.

Hi,
for an answer You can simply Google a keyword like this 'How to migrate Skype to Teams'
You have 2 (two) options
1. migrate Contacts and Chats:
--> How to Migrate Skype Contacts and Chats to Microsoft Teams Before May 2025 https://techrechard.com/how-to-migrate-skype-contacts-and-chats-to-micro...
--> this options allows You to import directly in Teams
2. migrate only Contacts:
--> How to Export Contacts from Skype to Local Machine? https://www.recoverytools.com/blog/import-skype-contacts-to-teams/
Remember: Teams can manage only CSV files (import and export).
So You must convert VCF to CSV using a free tools from Sourceforge.net:
--> Free VCF file to CSV or Excel converter https://sourceforge.net/projects/bulkvcftocsv/
--> direct download: https://sourceforge.net/projects/bulkvcftocsv/files/VCF%20Import%20v4.00...
thx, that will the thread poster also like.
