The current version number should be 0.59, not 0.5.9.
Is there any way to get PuTTY Portable to understand that, if the USB drive
is write-protected, I don't want anything written on it, and it shouldn't
bother to ask? It works quite well, except for that.
Thanks.
I fixed the version number, thanks.
And no, there isn't right now. That's Windows itself asking about the write (annoying isn't it). It does that on write-protected drives (like USB flash drives with a switch) but not on read-only media (like CDs). If there's interest, I can add a check into the launcher for read-only mode.

I think support for write-protected drives would be a good idea, not only in PuTTY but in the other programs as well. The whole idea here is to be able to plug your drive into any computer, anywhere you happen to be. (Insert non-work-safe analogy here. ) Some of those computers are going to have quite high probabilities of infection, so you'll want to switch the drive to read-only sometimes.
BTW, do you know how these write-protect switches work? Is it just a logic level sensed by the software -- sort of "Please don't write to me" -- or do the switches actually control the hardware, shorting the chip's Write Enable pin to ground or something like that?
They're increasingly rare these days as most manufacturers no longer make them. Basically, there was never much demand for them.
