John

We have been targeted by a massive spam attack overnight, we are just getting into the 11th hour of it as I'm typing this (although it seems to have gone quiet right now, fingers crossed it stays that way).

Estimate I've purged 400+ posts, maybe a lot more. There is/was one bot running every minute for most of those hours. The other accounts seemed to be manual, most were active before I was able to start clearing the posts but are quiet for now, however every once in a while a new one gets created or an old one tries again until they realised their posts are disappearing as quickly as they are posted.

But I can't keep it up forever, I've got to sleep now.

These are coming from a huge number of accounts. I've linked a bunch of them below, but this is definitely not all of them.

Hopefully Addressed, Thanks

Hi Ken. I've hopefully got this addressed. I still had IP blocking via StopForumSpam disabled due to issues with our former ad provider ezoic. They're re-enabled. I also re-enabled some other settings to throttle and block spammers. Hopefully this will lock things back down. Thanks for your work and sorry I didn't get this reconfigured earlier.

No worries

Thanks for getting those settings back to normal.

Still a few got through today, but ~20 posts was a whole lot easier to handle.

Leave Them

For now, please leave them up. Or, at least a few from each account. I can then mass report them to StopForumSpam and get the IP blocked.

Not quite sure the rate

Not quite sure the rate limiting is working very well. Had another 100+ posts from one user, some of them twice within a minute.

Left a post behind so you can report them.

Not Rate Limiting

It's not a rate limit. It's tied to StopForumSpam. We're using Drupal 7 which is EOL and only supported via an expensive third party at the moment. I only have so many tools available.

You can just leave everything up if you'd like and drop an email or a text when it occurs. I'll email you my phone number to text.

Newbish Sugestion

If possible:

  • To block new accounts from posting, till moderation (validation of new threads).
  • A limit of one thread a day for everyone, to limit spam even for regular users.
  • Etc.

Not Possible

These are not possible with our old CMS without custom coding a new module which I won't be doing.
