[Fixed] Nik plugin not working in GIMP 3.0.4

I recently downloaded the portable version of GIMP 3.0.4. I haven't tested it extensively, but have noticed that Nik Plugins don't work. I use the python script found at https://github.com/iiey/nikgimp/blob/main/nikplugin.py.

I put this file in its own folder, nikplugin, in the plugin folder D:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\references\plug-ins. However, this plugin is not detected by 4.0.4 whereas the G\MIC plugin in the same directory is detected. This plugin works without any problem in the installed version as well as the portable version downloaded from https://samjcreations-blogspot-com.translate.goog/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_t....

I am using the last freeware version of the Nik plugin, Google Nik Collection 1.2.11, downloaded from https://www.techspot.com/downloads/6809-google-nik-collection.html

BTW, this plugin worked without any problem on the 2.10.x versions downloaded from PortableApps.

Has anybody else faced this problem? Is there something I need to do differently for the 3.0.4 version downloaded from PortableApps?

Would appreciate any help to solve this problem.

Incorrect Location

That's likely the wrong location. Please see the note about paths here: https://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable#app-notes

Nik plugin for GIMP 3.0.4

I put the plugins, nikplugin as well as the G'MIC plugin in the directory you mentioned. Unfortunately, again the G'MIC plugin is detected correctly but not the nikplugin. Any workaround? Need the nikplugin badly!

Compatible?

Are you sure it's compatible with GIMP 3?

Compatible

I am pretty sure since this works with the installed version of GIMP 3.0.4 and the portable version from Samj.

I am following the instructions given in https://iiey.github.io/nikgimp/

Confirmed Issue, Working in GIMP Portable 2.x?

I can confirm that the plugin isn't showing up correctly in GIMP Portable 3.0.4 on Windows 10 64-bit and that it does show up correctly for the installed version.

You mentioned it worked on GIMP Portable 2.x. Do you know what specific version and how you'd installed it?

Nik plugin for GIMP 3.0.4

It worked with all the versions of GIMP Portable 2.10.x. The python script file has been modified for GIMP 3.x. As I have mentioned it in my earlier posts, it does work for the portable GIMP version from Samj downloaded from https://samjcreations-blogspot-com.translate.goog/?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_t.... Perhaps that will give you some clue.

Marked Bug

I've marked this as a bug so it is tracked. It also seems to affect some other plugins.

Quick Fix and Revision Coming

You can get this working now by editing the file GIMPPortable\App\pygimp.interp as follows:

python=PYTHONWDEFAULTPATH
python3=PYTHONWDEFAULTPATH
/usr/bin/python=PYTHONWDEFAULTPATH
/usr/bin/python3=PYTHONWDEFAULTPATH
:Python:E::py::python:

I've confirmed that the Nik plugin does work after making this fix.

I'll be posting a revision tomorrow to push this out to everyone including a small quick-install patch for existing users.

Thanks to JoATC_User in this post for figuring out that I forgot to fully update the python interpreters config in GIMP Portable 3.x

John, thanks so much for tracking and fixing this issue!

mmjoshi, it's a big ask, but could you please post instructions on exactly how/where to copy the Nik Collection files into Portable Apps, including sources for the versions you have working?

I've tried several "nikplugin.py" versions, and all I'm able to achieve is a "ghosted" menu item under Gimp/Filters showing "NikCollection", but nothing works, as there is nothing to click on. I do have the Nik Collection v1.2.11 installed, but am wondering if I've missed something else.
Thanks so much!
Amiga

Locations

Download the nikplugin.py file in the original post by clicking the first link and then clicking the Raw option just above the file. Then save that locally.

After you have run GIMP Portable at least once, explore to the GIMPPortable\Data\GimpAppData\plug-ins folder. Within that folder, create a new folder called nikplugin. In that folder, place the nikplugin.py file you downloaded earlier.

As long as the current version of NikCollection is installed locally, it should now work as expected.

Thanks John, but sadly that

Thanks John, but sadly that didn't help. I'd already configured everything that way which resulted in the ghosted Filters/ menu item. Just to double check, I reinstalled Gimp Portable (over my existing one, thinking maybe the R2 release didn't update), I use the nikplugin.py file from the link above in it's own folder in your portable Gimp plugins path, and even re-installed the Nik Collection from the other link above. Same result, ghosted (but there at least!) item at the bottom of Filters. I even tried "adding" a "Compatible Host Application" from the Nik Collection installation, pointing it to the Gimp portable plugin path. All that did was add another Google folder to the plugins, filled subfolders for each filter, and an *.lnk file, and a *.config file.

I appreciate your help anyway! Any other ideas?
Thanks again!!!

Details

What are the full details of your install? Windows version, bit depth (32 or 64), full install path for Nik local install, full install path for GIMP Portable, etc

Details

Windows 11 Home Edition, 64 bit
Nik installed in the default location C:\Program Files\Google\Nik Collection
PortableGimp installed in the default location \PortableApps\GIMPPortable
Have created a separate directory "GIMP Plugins" on a local drive which was shared by the installed and the portable versions of GIMP
Under "GIMP Plugins" have created a nikplugin directory which contains the nikplugin.py file.

Have used a similar set up for GIMPPortable version 2. Has worked in both the cases.

Hope this information is adequate. Would be happy to provide more details.

Working Here, Try This

Working here on Windows 11. Please try the following:

1. Make sure Nik is installed in the usual location
2. Install a fresh copy of GIMP Portable to your Desktop directory
3. Run GIMPPortable.exe directly, wait for GIMP to launch, then close it. Don't change anything
4. Explore to GIMPPortable\Data\GimpAppData\plug-ins within your Desktop directory and create a nikplugin directory.
5. Copy nikplugin.py to the GIMPPortable\Data\GimpAppData\plug-ins\nikplugin directory within your Desktop directory. Do not reconfigure your plugins directory in GIMP. Do not place any other plugins within there.
6. Launch GIMPPortable.exe, create a new blank image, then click Filters and then NikCollection

Well, I wonder what I did

Well, I wonder what I did wrong, but a fresh desktop install as you suggested worked just perfectly, THANKS!!!

As an exercise, I tried comparing my original non-working D: drive portable folder version with the new working desktop version, but couldn't find anything that caused the issue. I also wondered if my D: drive path name could have been the issue, so I renamed my non-working install, and copied the working desktop verion to my D: drive. Still works perfectly!

I then copied the Resynthesizer files and that too still works perfectly!

Thanks again John.

PS, if you are bored (joking) and want to see if you can make Liquid Rescale work with Gimp 3.0, I'd be thrilled!

PPS, for anyone interested in getting G'Mic working with Gimp 3.0, here are my simple steps that worked for me.
Download the latest version of G'MIC (v3.5.5 as of 7/24/2025 from:
https://gmic.eu/download.html
Extract the Zip archive and copy the folder “gmic_gimp_qt” and all contents to:
PortableApps\GIMPPortable\Data\GimpAppData\plug-ins\

Seam Carving in G'MIC

Unfortunately, no one has updated Liquid Rescale for GIMP 3.x yet. But the Seam Carving plugin in G'MIC seems to be the closest equivalent.
