SOOOO frustrated! help needed please.

Hi all.
I'm sure there must be someone out there that can help me out....!!

1. Using my laptop, I installed PortableApps suite to mu USB. Worked like a charm - except there are no icons visible for ANY programs I install, or any that are pre-installed (the files all load OK, though). Also, the links to documents, music, etc on the right hand side do not work - nothing opens when I click on them.
I have tried this with the full, lite and base installations but it's the same for all of them.

2. I then went on to Pstart. Tried to install to my USB (set as F: \\drive) but it wouldn't recognise it, even though it shows in My Compuer and I can access it OK. Tried saving to hard drive, then saving files to my USB and running but keep getting the following error:

"Pstart portable start menu has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

I then plugged my USB into another laptop, formatted it, and tried to install Pstart again. It worked fine and recognised the drive (this time E:\\) to install to no problem. I unpluged, plugged back into my original laptop, fired it up.....but got the error message again:

"Pstart portable start menu has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

I then rebooted in Safe Mode, went to the USB and fired up PStart - and it worked first time.
Back out of Safe Mode, logged in as normal and .....yup, you guessed it...

"Pstart portable start menu has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

GETTING VERY PI$$ED OFF NOW. DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO TO SORT THIS OUT.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME..?????

Thank you.

I have a good idea,

the problem is you are running Windows, the worst OS ever, just put Linux on your laptop instead. Here are some links to distros:

Ubuntu (Easy to use): http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download#currentrelease

Kubuntu (same as Ubuntu but uses KDE instead of GNOME)
http://www.kubuntu.org/download.php#latest

Xubuntu (same as Ubuntu but uses Xfce)

Cute, but not helpful.

Linux may or may not help, though I am hoping for ReactOS to get up to a more functioning quality for everyday use.

As to the post, I am not a laptop guru, but it sounds to me like there may be administrative restrictions on your regular account on this laptop. Is that possible?

To be realistic, i doub`t

To be realistic, i doub`t that will be in a useable state soon or ever. Maybe in 10 years it`s fully compatible with windows xp, but then we have vista 10 ?

Probably, but one can hope

Besides, I have 5 PCs that were given to me because people upgraded, and one Mac that was being junked because it wasn't the latest and greatest. I am used to being a little behind the times. I run Linux on most of them, but have ReactOS on one to play around with. I have been impressed with many parts of it though it is not by any means ready for primetime.

Sorry to put it to you this way...

but, an opinion of Linux vs. Windows will not solve a problem.

Not true

He described issues with his laptop also if you re-read the post. I really don't know what his exact issue is, but I would definitely backup that drive to a PC if it is dying before he loses everything.

The last flash drive I had that died did some of the same things.

CRACKED IT!

SORTED!

When I plugged my Ipod in, it came in as Drive F. I then plugged the USB in and is was Drive G.
I set the USB to be recognised only as Drive G through My Computer>Manage>Disk Management.
BINGO! Now works as Drive G every time on restart.

Thanks for everyone's advice!!
