Oldie but a goody: SimCity Classic for Windows appears fully portable.

I recently pulled out the install CD for SimCity Classic to see if it might be portable (or portable-ized) and was gratified to see that it does seem to be.

The Windows version appears to just be a re-dressed version of the original DOS program with some additional sounds added, so no registry entries are created of course.

It's not the latest-greatest version of this great game, but I think I spent all of ten dollars on it a couple of years ago. It's gotta be cheap if not free, if it's still available out there at all.

I have always loved this program, so it's cool to be able to get some time in on a city here and there.

I hope this info isn't too archaic to be useful to someone! Biggrin

[EDIT]

I noticed that the original DOS version of SimCity is considered "abandonware", so one could also use that one, albeit without the enhancements that the Windows version has.

[END EDIT]

Abandonware is not freeware

Abandonware is computer software which is no longer being sold or supported by its copyright holder.

Sorry

That crosses a line, I apologize.
I didn't consider the distinction at first but will in the future now that I've done some reading.

I am, however using a copy of the Windows version that I myself purchased and is registered to me for my setup.

If one can find it for sale somewhere, one can do the same.
I was just trying to share the fun.

A little follow-up since I went and started this

I made an error in my testing.
It appears that SimCity Classic for Windows puts a file called "RMTOOLS.DLL" into c:\Windows.
When trying to run SimCity for Windows on a machine OTHER than the two I originally tested it on (that already had it installed) I found that the program wasn't finding that file and didn't allow the program to run.

If this file is moved to the application folder it appears to run properly from a flash drive.

I can only assume that this stuff is too archaic for anyone else to try or someone would have noticed and reported this by now.

On a personal note:
I can only imagine what you folks who do this stuff for real go through.
In the future I'll be more careful in my testing and try to stay in the public domain with my apps.
