John is going to release a PortableGIMP, which is very good at manipulating images and is like photoshop. As for the firewall the AS3 Personal Firewall can do the job pretty well.

All software firewalls is put another port scanner between your computer and the outside world. These are quite useless if you already have a router as that's what the router primarily does (but via hardware as opposed to software). Just remember that it's only useful in some locations (places where you're directly hooked into the internet).
