Media Player ClassicPortable

This is a test release of Media Classic Portable it comes with a codec pack that would normally be packaged with mplayer but it works well enough with media player classic. Plugins are stored in Data\Plugins and then moved to the app directory so that any media file you play the plugins are activated and after execution the plugins are moved back into the plugins directory. The registry location is at HKCU\Software\Gabest\Media Player CLassic. for reasons I only have it only save Media player classic as other apps use the Gabest directory but next release I'll have it set so that it erases Gabest if there isn't any other keys in that section

Launcher only?

Only 18k.

Only the Launcher I assume.

Please give a link to MPC version you think would be best to use with this.

Fixed

The problem with the downloads was, in both cases:
Right click, save as, does not download a complete file.
I found I had the same problem downloading:
Sumatra_PDF_Portable_0.5_PRERELEASE.paf.exe

The download would not extract and gave the same Command Prompt error.

When I clicked on the link and let SourcFordge start the download it was much bigger and worked.

So I tried it on your links. The files are the right size and have extracted properly. All worked well, though I do wish you had gotten back to me about it.

Thats

Thats a relief. Yeah I understand the downloads not downloading properly. it happens to me all the time as use a dialup connection for the everyday use and then every friday I go to a computer with high speed. I would have high speed here at my house but our local internet provider doesn't come up where I am living at and we don't even have cable tv either so we have satellite. Then again there is also satellite Internet but thats expensive as hell

Preliminary Evaluation

In addition to the registry setting mentioned above,
HKCU\Software\Gabest\Media Player CLassic

The following files/directories are left behind:
C:\temp\nsd142.tmp\newadvsplash.dll [work machine]

C:\Documents and Settings\tim\Local Settings\temp\nsd142.tmp\newadvsplash.dll [home machine]

note: the "temp" variable on my work machine is odd. The home machine should be seen as more typical [and of course in both cases the name of the directory [nsd142] varies from launch to launch]

also:

C:\Documents and Settings\tclark[or tim]\Application Data\Media Player Classic\default.mpcpl
is left behind as well.

On Both the home machine [more power, less ram] and the work machine [less power, more ram] the startup is deadly slow. The splash screen should remain longer to assure people that the program is loading. This is horrendous on the flash drive.
[by the way, don't like the current splash screen but that's aesthetics, logo is much too small for the size of the overall image]

May I ask why the plugins need to be copied to the main app dir and then deleted on exit, what not put them there and leave them in the first place? Would this not increase speed of loading and shutting down?

Also, Can you/we make use of the "save settings to .ini" feature/setting or would this mess up your launcher?

Seems to want to loop movies by default, even though I've said "once" and saved settings.

==

The following probably apply to MPC and not the portable version specifically,

Response of controls is very bad:
click on file->quick open response time very, very slow.

Has problems "rendering" most Quicktime and "Real" movies,
As feature is one of the only reasons I would use this program over WindowsMediaPlayer, the author really needs to work on this.

Let me know what else you may need to know. I really would like to see this baby work.

Well

Well thanks for the feedback and I'll get working on the next version right away. and saving settings to ini, well I haven't incoorperated that in my launcher code as this is a launcher that I developed my self and couldn't figure out the ini section quite yet so I just didn't bother but I'll give it a go. I am also trying an expirament to see if it would notify the user of any newer version of the app with NSISdl.dll (Plugin for nsis)

Awaitng next release

I await your next release.

Btw, please realize I am not using any special tools to search for changes is the registry or left behind files or directories, I am relying on my [limited] understanding of where programs are likely to put things. If someone out there could use one of those "tracking/comparing before and after" programs the results might be more reliable. Anyone want to give it a try?

Well, the plugin registering needs a lot of registry...

I put it in the Pastebin

WoW

Was all of THAT removed on closing the program or have I trashed my registry. Maybe I shouldn't be an early beta tester.

Good job, but too big

It's a great job, but really, VLC Portable is a lot smaller (for us with small, 128MB drives). I think that any work on making it smaller would bring in more users.

Fantastic idea

A portable media player classic with the ability to play Real and Quicktime files would be absolutely fantastic!

I'm really looking forward to a "proper" release of this!!

Well

Well due to some disagreements between me and John Haller. I've agreed to not post anymore apps until we work something out together. So until then my apps are going to be on hold for a bit. (Gives me time to think of my YANC project and my other pursuits)
