Ummm

*The apps

They have been. They're all current versions except for OpenOffice.org which I'm finalizing some Java stuff for

Time for some games

Why not make/package some yourself?

Bring the search box back!

*NO!* The server cannot handle the extra load. This was explained a couple times previously. We're running on a dual dual-core AMD Opteron box with 8GB of RAM and a RAID5 SCSI disk array but we need to move to multiple boxes. Only problem is that donations + ads isn't enough to cover that. So, I'm manually caching certain pages on the site. But, due to the way Drupal works, that would break the search boxes on those pages. So, I have it as a link to the search page. Is that extra click really killin you?

More compleat develoment guide

I'm working on it.

Basically, it sounds like your post was "gimme gimme gimme" but you didn't offer to help at all, which isn't likely to make people want to do this stuff.

How about for the less

How about for the less technically adept of us?

I donated (A little), but I don't know what is "enough". I'm aware that "enough" is going to vary based on a personal own moral compass, but I feel like having some idea of what the bandwidth/time costs are for this project would enable me to set a more realistic price for what I've used.

I understand if you wouldn't want to answer that, perhaps you know of something else that would make it easier to gauge what is appropriate.

Working on it

I'm working on some partnerships to allow this project to be more self-sufficient. That way donations can go to the base projects. Currently, hosting costs $12,000 a year. And I'm bringing on the downloads-only virtual server for hosting some specific freeware apps that a lot of people have requested.

The problem is that, realistically, we need to break the site out into at least 3 servers. Split off the forums to its own thing. Separate mysql/apache, etc. Then I can open up that wiki I have waiting to go into testing. Ad revenues + donations pay for the current hosting. And, I should be able to sneak the downloads-only virtual server in there without putting too much of my own cash in. (I've already put quite a bit in, myself.) The problem is that if I sign a contract for another couple servers and then donations or ad revenue fall off, I'm in deep doo-doo.

I'm *not* putting out a call for extra donations at this exact moment... but I will be making an announcement along these lines next week with some details on where we are now and where we could take things with a little extra cash (and without being beholden to an outside investor that may not get the open source aspect of all this).
