At my community college we have a problem with losing our jump drives. Could someone create a splash screen app that we could enter our info such as
"if found please return to..."
something that could maybe open when protable apps is started? If there is such a product please let me know. Thanks everyone for all your hard work and keep up the great innovations.
Been thinking about this for a while now.
We even have a web site for it. www.findmyusb.com (not operational yet)
Maybe I should get of my lazy behind and do it.
How does a page the finder can visit and enter their contact details to send you an email sound?
You remain annonymous until you contact the person to get your drive back.
Easy enough to get the unique drive ID from the drive and use that as the locator for what drive the person has found.
It wouldn't be hard to have it available from the portableapps menu.
I personally think that would be a great idea. It sucks when you lose a flash drive, especially if it is a good/expensive one.
Please pardon my English, I'm from Wisconsin.
Hey Ian,
Tried contacting you through this site, but wasn't able to send you a message.
It seems some guy in Oregon (Ken Westin) did something for his master's project regarding usb drive recovery. His company, GadgetTrak (or is it GadgetTheft?), claims to have a patent on software which automatically contacts someone if they report their device as stolen. The video says it was his master's thesis
Here's a public relations positive video from their site.

I just started wondering about the same stuff you guys were. Man do things happen fast!
Its available here. There is even a nsi script to adjust the exe and built your own.

If your drive has been stolen, you are chucking your details out to whowever has already proven themselves to have criminal intent.
This way they do not know who you are until you contact them.
The other part to it is a user section where you can mark a particular drive as stolen, lost, or remove it altogether from your list when you sell it or it breaks.
That way if it is used to access the web site after being stolen, you get an email with the IP address date time etc.
That would probably need to be built into the drive like U3.

It is not built into the drive or the iso section currently in the U3 platform.
So, just through Firefox Portable? I'd make an extension.

just place both files in the the same directory as the portable apps menu, edit the config.dat, and change your auto-run file to launch "lost.exe"
