I have just installed the 2.0.0.2 version and find that it is still slow [like with ver 1.5] on downloads. I'd be interested to know why this is? It seemed to get stuck when i set it [in options] to download to a hard disk folder. Seemed to be better with the option of choosing a drive/folder to download to.
For ver 1.5 it was recommended to use the Statusbar addon [think! from memory].
It would seem FireFox doesn't like large downloads - i switched to IE earlier today to download XAMPP. But it was still slow i feel with some pdfs of 350k.
What causes this - is it to do with its multi-platform capability? I use PortableFirefox for its functions and bookmarks. (The number of times i have reinstalled the system and forgotten to save the bookmarks when i used Netscape). Firefox by my reckoning is slower than Netscape 7.2 which i believe was designed on a similar basis.
For downloads i use the "tools-always view this page in IE" i'm afraid. perhaps someone else has noticed this and could recommend a patch.

It's something with a setup. Even off a really old USB 1.1 no-name device, downloads to the local PC are just as fast as running Firefox locally. I just downloaded the full PortableApps.com Suite using a copy of Firefox Portable from said slow, old device and had a consistent 600k through the whole 90MB download. Same performance as with my local Firefox.
It's best to let it ask on each download and save it to a local folder on the PC. If you choose to save it to your portable device, it will slow EVERYTHING down while it is downloading and writing.
Bottom line, unless you have a fast portable hard drive or one of the faster flash-based drives, DO NOT download directly to your portable device. It's not a FF issue, it's a simple limitation of your device. (Write speed is *SLOW*)
PS - The reason IE seems faster is that it downloads to your local temp directory and then copies it over to the download location. To achieve the same result with Firefox Portable, just download to the local PC's desktop and, when it's done, move it to your portable device.

FF does seem to be much faster when 'it asks for a local folder'. I had set it to download to a specific folder [hard drive c:\downloads] in tools>options and somehow that slows it down - i hadn't tried to save it to a flashdrive.

I have been using a 4gb Ativia with PortableApps for 8 weeks, and everytime FireFox auto updates, it runs slower and slower, when it suggests an update should I decline it??
Also FireFox takes ages to start now (was a few seconds, now a couple of minutes)
