tbird is not keeping track of the drive letter changes

The drive is not dying as some have suggested -the same thing happens in a USB flash drive and 2 different USB external drives. I did some digging and found that G:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\settings remains set at the drive letter G when I change computers, even though the new computer will assign a different drive letter to the drive when I attach it. It is an easy fix - I simply change the drive letter in the above mentioned file to whatever letter the drive is listed as in the new computer and thunderbird PE works great. I just don't know why thunderbird PE doesn't change it.

It even

stays G: after you run TB's Launcher once?
Because I think the Launcher is supposed to change the drive letter.

Workaround

Hi

I face this problem always. I have to start the application3 times. 1st Time I get an error. 2nd time screen is blank
3rd time It works correctly.

Also sometimes TBP starts but there is no user interface. So I have to kill it.
(I am working on windows xp, TB 1.5..)

Drive Issues

Most likely your drive is dying. I suggest backing up what data you do have.

Absolute paths?

Do you have absolute paths set up for your Data in TBP or are you using the PAM with the .paf format?

Also I completely agree with Ryan, you might have a dying drive.

Backing up your info should be a daily task.

If you are using the

If you are using the launcher (i.e. PortableFirefox.exe, NOT firefox.exe directly), you should not lose data when moving between machines. Could be an underpowered USB hub or that your drive is dying otherwise.

TBird Portable is not renewing the paths for the profile data

It doesn't. nor does it need to

TB will work fine regardless of the path as long as you don't change the paths to the mail folders *AT ALL*. If you do, your profile is no longer portable until you remove those custom paths. This usually occurs with a profile someone copied over from a local TB install.

ok - so what did I do wrong?

I downloaded and installed thunderbird PE on a USB flash drive. I setup all the accounts and then disconnected my drive from my desktop computer (had drive letter I)and plugged it into my laptop (computer assigned drive letter G). Opened it up and everything was fine. Removed the drive from the laptop and reconnected to desktop (computer assigned same drive letter again,"I" )and I opened TB PE - all the emails and acoount settings were gone. There was no data at all in the install. So, I tried it again, this time on a 60GB removable USB hard drive. Did the same exact steps, got the same result. Data was fine on the initial install and was intact on the first move, but upon returning to the desktop there was no data again.

thanks
