Anyone know of a program to sync Firefox Bookmarks?
Not just copy the bookmarks file, actually sync the bookmarks themselves.
Its the one thing that really, really bugs me about mozilla's bookmarks.
mozilla/netscape used to use favorites ages ago but had to change to bookmarks.
(anti Microsoft is one thing, but at some point it becomes counter productive, i.e. bookmarks)
Every sync program on the planet can sync favorites since they are separate files, but I haven't found a single one that will sync bookmarks.

I use a Firefox Extension called Google Browser Sync.
It allows you to choose what to sync: Cookies, Saved Passwords, Bookmarks, History, and/or Tabs and Windows.
I sync Bookmarks, History, and Tabs and Windows. I get the same bookmarks at home, at work, and on Firefox Portable.
It requires a free Google account and sometimes asks you to re-enter the password for that account. And obviously you need to install the extension in each place.

Why not use Foxmarks? It syncs all three different firefox's I use. Add a bookmark on one, when the other startup it pulls the booksmarks from the server (syncin) and they are there in less than 2 seconds
I personally like Google Browser Sync (http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/browsersync/index.html) and have it installed in my Firefox Portable as well as Firefox on my home PCs. It can be used to synchronize various browser components (e.g. cookies, passwords, history) but I only use it for bookmarks (with encryption turned on).
It works unobtrusively; the only time you are aware of it is when you are occasionally prompted to verify your Google account password.

I don't want to have to sync to a server somewhere.
Also synctoy only sync's files, not bookmarks.

You mean sync between an installed version of Firefox and a portable version? I don't quite get what you mean by local...
For the record: I'm using http://www.foxmarks.com/
local would mean any bookmark files that are local to my computer.
Yes an installed version of Firefox to a Portable version would be an example.
Sync with a "backup" copy of the bookmark file on a removable drive would be another.

I'm failing to see how Google Browser Sync wouldn't work...
You install GBS, it uploads your bookmarks file from your home version of Firefox so that when you open up your portable version, it will be updated. Then if you add any bookmarks to your portable version, they will be updated on your home version. Actually, you can have as many as you want...so home, office, portable, and laptop would all have the same bookmarks.
This is NOT a server based bookmarking solution, where you would have to go to a website to retrieve your bookmarks. This actually updates your bookmarks file.

It is still server based, it syncs with a google account, then sync to which ever firefox you connect to it.
Also it won't sync to a local backup file.
Don't get me wrong, the server based sync's are a really cool option.
I'm just looking for a local sync option to work with by current backup schedule.
I use SmartSync Pro to backup all my files etc to a portable usb hard drive on a regular basis. It sync's files in the backup set saving disk space on duplicating files in multiple backups. I should be able to do the same thing with my bookmarks, I can do it with my favorites.

I use a very simple .bat file to sync bookmarks.html which is in "\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles" to "PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile" on my thumb drive. This will just get you your bookmarks copied over.
If you want bookmarks, extensions, cookies and such copied over I would suggest you use the Microsoft Synctoy to copy over you entire profile folder.
This is not a free program, but I'm trying it out. You can sync both IE and Firefox on one computer and then save it as an exportable file to copy to your second computer. On the second computer it will sync the current IE and firefox AND the links in the exported file.
You can use it on your flash drive as well to bring your bookmarks with you to new computers. It ain't perfect. It does only what it promises and nothing more.
This doesn't rely on any server connection.

I looked at bookmark base. Unless I am missing something, it doesn't really "sync" it imports and then exports. Not really the same thing.

You're right but it's the closest thing I have been able to find. I've almost given up on Google Browser Sync. It just doesn't seem to do what it promises. I've scoured the web and tried many things and this is the closest I have found. It also allows you to take the program with you portably so that you have your favorites in a second location for a backup. This is one of the most frustrating things about Firefox. Things were so simple when IE just stored the favorites in a standard directory that could be synced very easily.
Even the sync programs that I've tried, none of them truly sync - even if they promise to. I want a program that will also sync deletions, not just insertions. With most sync programs if you delete a dead favorite from one computer it just gets copied back by another computer when you sync - aaaaarrgh.

i am using it from last 6 months and its working great. I usually sync my portable application on may laptop with USB drive and this tool is really a good one. Try it.

I used Google Browser Sync, but I wouldn't rely on it as if someone retrieve your USB drive (ie: lost), they will be able without much trouble to have access to your account informations with relative ease. I finished ending up using the Master Password, avoid cookies on USB drives and use Gmarks.
I have tried many different options and I keep coming back to a combination of Google Bookmarks (www.google.com/bookmarks) and the GMarks Firefox extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2888).
Your bookmarks live online in ONE place only and therefore there is no sync involved. GMarks views bookmarks directly off the internet.
I had tried a number of sync programs which always seemed to choke or make mistakes. The revelation came for me when I realized that I did not need bookmarks when I was offline. (You still should make local back ups though!)
Another similar and good solution is Delicious and its plugin. I use this for tagging/sharing my public bookmarks.
