Anyone know know how to make a fake cd drive?

you know one within my thumbdrive, like how U3 smart drives have a fake-CD drive, can anyone tell me how to make one for my thumbdrive. Cause I don't feel like saving up money for a U3 drive that has more space than 512 MB.

You would have to write your

You would have to write your own firmware for the usb drive.
And only if the usb drive will even support that type of firmware.

For those who have fought for it, freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.

It's been done

There is a group, it's called U3 Smile
This one of the key selling points of U3.
I'm sure there not gonna tell us how to do it.

Seriously, you would need to buy a U3 drive and reverse engineer it for the firmware I think [and I have no idea, now that I've used the words reverse engineer, if that's legal]

No, I meant

an opensource alternative to U3's fake CD drive concept, I guess now all we can do Is buy U3 stupid drives for that fake CD-drive for our precious lazy, no click autorun.

Waiit...

Why do you want a fake C.D. drive?

Cause...there's this

http://arcanecode.wordpress.com/2006/09/13/virtualization/

Just click on virtual p.c. c.d.-rom control panel applet for windows XP

and that gives ua fake c.d. drive but I think i can only mount .isos on is.

But I have no idea what you want. I just happened to see that a couple of weeks ago.

Autorun is going bye bye

Don't forget that CD autorun is disabled by default on Windows Vista. Rumor is Windows XP SP3 will disable it by default as well due to the whole audio CD rootkit debacle. And most PCs in public places have it disabled already. So, it really only applies to your own PC. Basically, everyone concerned with security should have it disabled today.

And, it's also that fake autorun that makes U3 crash systems with most CDRW software on em (like Nero's InCD which I found out the hard way).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Please,

can we stay away from InCD, it is probably the piece of software that I hate the most.

To get

the lazy no-click autorun, the reason why you wanted to buy a U3 drive, Have Some Paitence! Biggrin
And John, I don't use Nero's software anyway, and besides I only use my drive on my Mom's laptop and my school laptop.
But you are right there are security risks involved with that, I don;t mind if I am using it at a public place, but I use my drive everyday on my school laptop, and I am annoyed that I waste 1 sec (possibly 2) by clicking of the popup due to the Autorun.ini file. Plus I don't use anycomps with Vista, and besides if I come across one, I don't mind, only if I am gonna use it everyday! Also for the end of my mouthful nobody uses my Mom's or my school laptop besides me( just the school lt) and my Mom, and we keep the laptops VERY WELL HIDDEN.

I think there is a hardware

I think there is a hardware device in the U3 drive, hence the extra price - it's not a software thing.

...

If it is a hard ware addition, then why is mine uninstalled from my Sandisk U3 Titanium 2GB drive? First thing i did when i got mine was go how cute a U3 menu... I immediately visited sandisk website and found and downloaded the U3 removal tool. Now my U3 stick is just a USB flash drive with no annoying U3 menu at all. It still says in the device manager that it is a U3 stick but I no longer have the additional CD partition.

ha ha!

yah know ya didnt have to download the removal tool. if you just go to the launchpad settings, it has a whole thing just for removing the launchpad. oh and there is no extra chip that is deactivated. when you remove the launchpad, there is a special flash drive controller that allows the drive to run u3, when you remove the launchpad, it removes the controller and the launchpad thus makeing it a reguler flashdrive. you can find this at the u3 site if ya want.

Actually

Actually there is a chip and there is a way to reinstall the u3 drive as well. Certain brands have an update tool that holds a newer version of the launchpad. you install the update and it replaces the launchpad back on the flashdrive
