Perhaps this is a dumb question

but I'm going to ask it anyway. I bought a 2mb Sandisk USB loaded with U3. The software choices they offer are a bit limited. If I Uninstall the U3 software and just start over by downloading the portable apps suite, will it have the same functionality or does it need a U3 type interface to run?

I haven't used one of these before.

Thanks.

Well,

Well, I am not clear of your question. Are you asking whether you can use PortableApps on a non-U3 drive?(to which the answer is yes) Or are you asking if you want to use U3 again, will you be able to do so?(to which I have no idea :))

If I remove the U3 software

If I remove the U3 software (essentially turning it into a simple USB stick), will I automatically load Portable apps software onto the stick if I download the portable apps suite? I like having a user interface, but I just don't like the software choices U3 offers. Some are the same, but there are too many lite programs (or ones that aren't free).

Okay,

Okay, I am still not sure what you are saying, so I will step you through this. Download the Portable Apps Suite, whatever version (Lite, Standard, Base) to a folder on your computer (not the flash drive). Then double-click the file you downloaded and extract the file to your drive (e.g. F:/). Then, you can download any apps that you want on your drive. When you download them, open the Portable Apps Menu (e.g. F:/StartPortableApps.exe) and click on “Options” and select “Install a New App” and choose the app you wish to install. Any further questions? If you understood this completely, then sorry for embarrassing you .

I got it now. Thanks. U3

I got it now. Thanks. U3 has some kind of interface installed. I wasn't sure if the portable apps suite were just application software, or if they included an interface as well. From what you've written, they include an interface...which answers my question. Thanks again!

Yep - it should be no

Yep - it should be no problem to delete the u3 using the function on the u3 menu or just format it. Then you can install the superior portableapps package.

You can always restore the U3 later if you like by downloading it from sandisk.

I also figured out yesterday how to make sandisk cruzersync work with the portable apps package which I needed because I am an outlook user. Thunderbird and sunbird are great but outlook is one of the things microsoft did an amazing job of especially with the 2007 model.

Not a dumb question, but a smart answer:

In a word, U3 sucks...

(well, OK, 5 words, but you get the idea...)

It has it's place in the market.

I originally purchased a U3 drive as I was unaware of an open source alternative. The sandisk cruzer titanium is my thumbdrive of choice purely because it will take the beating i will inevitably dole out to it. It happens to come with U3

U3 is nice because there's some money behind it and SOME commercial apps I use on the pc are available in U3. There are also numerous open-source apps configured into u3 installers. Keepass was a good example. As soon as it was available as .paf i switched it over to my portableapps™ menu. I'll always choose portableapps™ over U3 when there is a choice, but for now for SOME programs u3 is the only option.

John's suite will win out though. It'll just take time, as getting the word out will take longer without the marketing $$ of sandisk. Non-restricted device type, along with a growing list of quality apps make portable apps the clear choice, but until I can have everything I want in 1 format, U3 will remain on my thumbdrive.
