[Closed] Naming Competition (Official) [Winner Announced]

Hi all,

As some of you may have already guessed I am moving PUSS over here to Portableapps.com As part of that John and I have decided that maybe a new name is in order and this is where I need your help. What I am looking for is a simple professional name for PUSS. It can be an acronym (although one better than PUSS would be required) or not as you see fit, and the name doesn't have to sum up the program. Once this competition ends one week from today (30-03-2007) I will aim to release the winning name and version 1.0 (yes with the new name I will restart the version numbering) on the 2nd April (although it may take longer if there are a lot of good names and/or last minute bugs). The wining name will obviously be used as PUSS's new name and the author, if they would like, can have their name in the About box.

Good Luck

Steve Lamerton

*Edit*

And the winner is.... (drum roll please)

Toucan by vbap

An special mention goes too...

SUBSS by wsm23 and with changes by me
Seciun by Cheat_King
Portable Securizle and Utilizle Sizzle by cavedeamon
And all the entries by Hung0v3r, I got a number of nasty looks when I said Herpes and burst out laughing Wink

Vbap if you could e-mail me on steve(dot)lamerton(at)gmail(dot)com I will add you to the about box of Toucan 1.0!

*Edit 2*

The new Toucan logo looks like this

Pure esc

'Pure esc'

Pure - simple
e{ssential} - a basic, indispensable, or necessary element
s(ecure) - affording safety
c(oncurrent) - occurring or existing simultaneously or side by side

Also 'esc' is commonly known as the escape on the keyboard, giving a little extra meaning to the programs presence. So it's also a 'simple escape' from a possible tragedy.

Well it sounding good when I was eating my curry and I would have the esc in italics just to give it more prominence in the name.

I like!

You could replace the cat with a submarine icon. Kind of a defense/military type thing. Also ties into the encryption part, because many military applications require 128 bit or stronger encryption.

Also, being that you are from the UK you could hint at the whole "yellow submarine" thing. I do not know if you could use any icons that I have found in your application. I would have to see if they have any info on licensing.

They are fun.

Acronyms are fun though. Catchy.

Your app name will ultimately be anacronized anyway. You need to be sure the full name shortens easily too. That is why you are choosing a different name now.

Fair enough,

I must say I quite liked the names Arukez & Seciun, although I'm not sure how rememberable they would be, as for the acronyms none have stood out to me yet, although you never know, one might start to grow on me.

Not very descriptive.

Arukez and Seciun do not pop out at me.

Of course if I look at the Apps list on the left I guess they are not very descriptive either.

Here's a good one

Name(s):
Talisman
Amulet

Definition(s):
Objects to act as a charms for good luck.

Reasoning:
This app is like a talisman (or amulet) for flash drives since it has so many "must-have" functions. I think sounds cool too Smile

How bout

Absolute Defense

Because it can encrypt, backup, and sync. For instance if someone finds and and uses the thumbdrive for them selves and tries to use the data on the thumbdrive, they will be dissapointed that the data in encrypted, or if something gits rid of the data, the synced or backed up data will be safe on whatever you put it on. So the name Absolute Defense makes sense, because it defends your data from prying-eyes and a disaster.

or how bout Armogohma

because, 1st of all the name is cool (it is the name of the 6th boss in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess), the majority of the boss is armor controlled by an eye on it's back, this refers to PUSS being armor to your data.

Oh by the way, can I use PUSS in my portable application suite I am making without removing logos and can I keep the name PUSS (until it is renamed?)?

Synchronicity?

It is a synchronization software. Marketing wise the name needs to reflect that.
usync has been taken already in a Google code project. Here are some suggestions:

u-sync
micro sync (with the micro symbol).
I think "USB Sync" has been taken already.
Pensync
Thumb Sync
NSync? (just kidding...).
or just plain SYNC

Hi,

As Dten said, i think the main use of PUSS is more or less synchronizing...
So i guess, i would suggest something like...

SLam Sync
or
SLam SyncSecure
or
SyncSecure ???

What do you think ?

I thought I had heard that name before.

It is part of some security suite. I did not install the suite to read the license. I think it also exists as a standalone app.

Any worries about name taken?

Is there any reason to be worried that that name is already taken by another type of software?

http://homes.esat.kuleuven.be/~saerts/software/toucan.php

or this one:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/toucan/ (this one might cause more confusion if you eventually host on sourceforge.

Well, maybe it should be like UtiliCanPardon or UtiliToucanPardon or something like that.

To be

honest, I'm not too worried (I'd already searched :)) they are both completely different pieces of software and neither of them come up on the first page of Google. Also the Sourceforge package hasn't been updated for nearly four years and the other one for nearly two.

All I've got

new!
FDAngel = Flash Drive Angel (sounds quite similar to the anime, DNAngel eh?:p)
Exigent = because flash drives without it are...
Magic Panda = if your into mammalian nomenclature
Samurai Panda = if your into mammalian nomenclature and some other things...

reconsideration?
Paragon, Talisman, Amulet, Skulk

A couple more

Since you clearly missed the boat on STANKPUSS I thought of a couple more that may be up your alley.

ASS4NUBS
Another Security Suite 4 your Super-Nerd Utility BeltS.

PUBES
Portable Utility: Backup, Encrypt, Secure

HERPES
Highly Efficient, Reasonably Portable, Encryption Suite

I think the latter has a real zing to it.

Imagine you're at work. The boss comes in frantically yelling "Jetson! We need your help. All the systems have died. We can't access our data, we're hemorrhaging money!!!!"

You just grin and kick your feet up on your desk. "Not to worry sir, I've got HERPES"

You can contact me regarding my prize at Hung0v3r@gmail.com

maybe

the name should just reflect that it is a utility suite... maybe US (utility suite). PortableApp's US... nah, that sucks.:)
