I was trying to reboot one of the computers at my school with the Ubuntu Live CD, and instead of running Ubuntu, the machine restarted in Windows. Then, when I tried to change the BIOS settings during startup (to allow boot from CD), it asked for a password to make changes. Is there any way to override this password protection?
Thanks,
Adam
Well you could ask your teacher/Admin. Maybe he gives it to you

Open the case, set the jumpers to maintenance mode.
Restart, bios will be reset.
You could take the hard drive out and stick it in your backpack while you're in there.

put your own harddrive in and boot from there...

battery and wait a couple of minutes for the BIOS to reset.

Mmmm... when the computer is booting, you can push F8...
In some bios, F8 calls the "boot window" that you can choose the source of boot...
Sorry for my english...
It has already been noted that there is a password enabled.

For all the suggestions, I'll give them a shot... I don't think I could get away with pocketing the hard drive tho...

You're right. RAM is much easier to steal. What was I thinking?

umm there are utilities that just tell u the password from windows
Use (the) google (lol) i think its name is cmospswd just run it look for a password or match it with the bios remeber it or write it down then shut the PC off then restart enter password when prompted and... ure in! lol also remember to lock the doors to stall the school police force lol when ure doing this and bring gas bombs to make a clear escape and dont forget to burn the evidence j/k! but really think of the consequences when doing this like u would be better off just trying a virtual machine, qemu is the best portable one i can think off the top of my head and qemu manager is a Gui that is also portable that would help for the n00bs who hate CLI based apps.

I'll give it a shot, it's not such a big deal; just want to see if I can do it lol. It's just that the librarian monitors all the computers and I figured if I booted in Ubuntu of Knoppix he wouldn't be able to, but I dont think he'd know what I'd be doing if I changed the bios lol :D.

Even if you do, good luck getting on the internet, unless you have your own connection. It's not nearly as simple as it seems. There are a lot of things that are set up in Novell (or whatever your school uses) that you don't know about.

you have a running net connection (like the DSL modem we have at home) it is easy. Most of the live cd I tried were able to get the internet up and running automatically.

if you can get into the case find the red switch box. then (when the comp is off) switch #5 on, boot, shut down #5 off/#4 on, boot, shut down #5 again and then shutdown, bot, settings and set it to what ever you please! this process will clear the system bios, then the administrator password and then make a cleen sweep of your trax and make sure that the passwords are disabled.

when i said bot after the final swith set i ment boot!
