Picasa 2

Could anyone make a portable version of Picasa? This would be largely helpful to me when I go to other computers at other people's house and they want to find pictures without installing any files or when I'm at school making a webpage and cannot find a picture because my website is terribly disorganized. This would be awesome if it is possible, because I know there are laws and other things with the way Picasa is made. Just wondering if anyone is good enough at programming to do this because I'm just learning C++ and other languages.

Thanks,

Tyler

...

Even though Picasa 2 (possibly) could be copyrighted, there are other open-source portable apps out there that accomplish the same thing. However, I have yet to find them... heh heh.

Portable Apps are cool. End of story.

possible alternative: PhotoMesa

http://www.windsorinterfaces.com/photomesa.shtml "a zoomable image browser. It allows the user to view multiple directories of images at once, and uses simple navigation commands to smoothly zoom in and out. PhotoMesa requires only images on disk, and does not require any annotation, importing to a database, or other organization."

it's free, but not redistributable without license or open source.

Have you tried this?

I simply installed Picasa 2 to the hard drive, found the program folder, copied it to my flash drive and ran the executable from the flash drive. If you only want Picasa to temporarily find pictures on other computers, I think this is all you need to do. Good luck.

One thing about that though:

One thing about that though: It's not a clean runner. It will install registry entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Picasa, and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Google\Picasa. So, if you want a totally clean proggie, you'll have to make an uninstall key, or a batch file or something. Though it's entirely possible that you don't really care, lol. Blum

John (Haller),

Can you remove this link and the one here please?
As stated in Picasa's EULA:
This means that you may use it at work or at home, but you first need to obtain Google's permission if you want to sell the Picasa Software or any information, services, or software associated with or derived from the Picasa Software, or if you want to modify, copy (except as explicitly provided below), license, or create derivative works from the Picasa Software (collectively, "Commercial Use")...
This Agreement allows you to install and use the Picasa Software on a single computer... If you have any questions regarding the terms of distribution, please contact us at http://www.google.com/picasasupport.
For each copy of the Picasa Software authorized under this license, you may make one backup copy, provided your backup copy is not installed or used concurrently on different computers. You must reproduce on any such copy all copyright notices and any other proprietary legends on the original copy of the Picasa Software. Google is not obligated to provide maintenance, support, or updates to you for the Picasa Software.

This is simply not true. I

This is simply not true. I mean, EULA is OK. But it says clearly " your backup copy is not installed or used concurrently on different computers. "

If I make Picasa portable and I use it on my USB stick. I come home, i plug in, I am using it, i unplug, the program does not exist on that PC, i come to my other computer, i plug in my USB i work on that computer (which is the only computer that has my picasa on int) and so on.

You would be breaking EULA if you would copy the program on every computer and let`s say use your USB not to run the program, but rather to transport pictures or something!

But

The point is that you can't redistribute Picasa with that backup copy.

I agree with Mad_Duke. What

I agree with Mad_Duke. What he describes is not redistribution rather how he uses his app that he carries with him.

Since none of us are lawyers our opinions are merely differing points of view and carry no legal bindings. To consider them as something more would be foolish.

OK. So that means You can`t

OK. So that means You can`t put a portable here for people to download. But You can make it your own.

I tried just installing on my computer, than copying the files from the install folder on my USB stick. After that I uninstalled the picasa from my computer and now it works on my USB. For now tested on 4 different machines. None of them had something left afterwards.

The point

is that Picasa can not be redistributed with a launcher as it is a "derivative work" Plus, it's not open-source so you can't post it anyway under the new rules. Wink (Inside joke for John)

Where did you check? Whole registry, local file-system?
