I know that this is pretty much the same as the original question (excuse my noobiness) but what exactly can PuTTY be used for? I know a fair deal about TCP/IP networking and I have never came accross this.
you don't need it. If you don't know what Telnet and SSH are, you don't need them. Most people don't. Unless they have a Linux box they manage. Wikipedia can explain more about what telnet and SSH are.
