My suggestion is to search the forums. This has been discussed before. I've done Notepad++ but am not ready to release it yet. I believe OTBSupport has one available at software.otbsupport.com

Anyway, I think that it would be nice to have a good text and hex editor packaged as a portableapps app.

If you want, just search the forums for "scite", and this site, (John T. Haller) has already released a version of it, but it's in beta. It should be one of the first posts that comes up, something like Scite Pre-Release.
I believe Notepad++ is already portable as I've got it on mine. When I checked the link I had to the same page you provided, the download link was offline for some reason. But I got it from the same site you did. But it is already portable.

that it is. I found that it writes something to the registry (albeit a minor thing). It also crashed on one/two occasions with me. That is a bit like Foxit to me - it'll be ok most of the time but is not a true portable.
From what i've learnt so far (apart from the listed apps on this site) - a portable app should be a zip to be sure it is portable. I'd be grateful for comments on this!
This site's apps have been fine and XnView(zip) have worked faultlessly for me. VLC and sumatra didn't but i think there is conflict with software somehow on my machine - as i have tried several pdf apps and have quite a few audio/DVD apps.
The fact that it's a zip really doesnt mean anything, other than there is no installer..it could still write registry settings or files in %APPDATA$ or other locations

So why do people say for such and such an app - 'there's a zip file file for the purists'. Quite wrongly then i've interpreted that as meaning that the app is totally standalone. Apologies for last post.
I can't see any point of a zip or installer why isn't an app just bundled as an executable zip. I thought most installers were from the days of floppy disk installations, had to look for files on an install sequence, and at a certain stage write to the registry.
Please explain a bit more.
Zips are used for most open-source smallish programs, plus cross-platform stuff.
Installers are used for stuff like start menu shortcuts and desktop shortcuts.
