Floating Icons!

I use PStart and don't seem to have had any problems with any of the applications running.

However, i do notice the icons in PStart seem to 'float'. eg sometimes the FireFox icon appears next to Thunderbird. Sometimes it seems as many as 6 have floated.

Occasionally the odd desktop icons seem to have floated.

While no-one else to the best of my knowledge has mentioned this i'd be interested to know what a possible cause could be. It didn't happen before i used portable apps so i am just assuming that it is something to do with it!

thanks

Multilayered?

When I was editing some icons for my PAM menu recently. I discovered with GIMP Portable that the icons was editing had 4 to 6 layers in them from 128x128 to 16x16 all layered on top of each other. PAM doesn't like layered icons, PStart might have similar limitations.

Multi-Icons are fine with PAM

Multi-icons are fine with PAM. You just can't use them for the right-side icons. They must all be 24x24 by 256 colors and 24x24 alpha.

So if that is a problem with

So if that is a problem with Pstart how do i solve it - or is it just in the app. Thing is they just seem to float some of the time. Today! - none.

Perhaps it's just one app that somehow conflicts with another. With a lot of use i might be able to identify a pattern. I'll try this Asuite launcher but i thought the Pstart was better. Easier to load apps into as it takes the name from the app without having to type in a name - that was the drawback of Asuite. My 'dose' of portable apps is getting larger - up to 1GB now.

For me the portability is an added benefit. I just find its so much easier for upgrades to just delete a portable app and install the new knowing that there is no impact on anything else.

My theory: when an app reads/writes to the registry repeatedly it slows windows down - hence its christian/alternative name 'windoze'.

Am i right!

kinda!

usualy only slows down a small bit unless you have a big antivirus prog installed. otherwise, it shouldend be 'windozeing'

Floating icons...

well it would seem to be something to do with Pstart it would seem - or something conflicting. I removed Pstart - just loaded the apps when i needed them during the day through Windows Explorer - no icons moving.

Decided to install Asuite as a replacement for Pstart - fine no problems. So some conflict there somehow - any ideas.

Corrupted file?

Have you tried a fresh copy of PStart?

Fresh copy!

I've tried a couple since Xmas. I think you are correct though - a file is getting corrupt there somehow. A problem somewhere/somehow on my machine.

Instead of downloading again i thought i'd give this Asuite a go - after all it is being maintained whereas Pstart isn't.

I'm still trying to work out the best way of using the launcher. I run mine from sending an shortcut icon from the USB drive to the desktop. Asuite i noticed has set up a temp .xml file when i've done this.

When i use the portable apps at work i just use Windows Explorer and go straight to the app directory as it seems the drive letter assigned depends on how many USBs in the machine.

Some of us are still learning these things!
