Looking for menu that runs on a write protected drive

Does anyone know of a menu app that doesnt try to write to the drive when it starts up?

PortableApps menu tries to write to every folder on startup which seems very strange and unneccessary to me!

Read Only Is Fine

PortableApps.com Menu works fine from a CDROM, etc. It's only if you're using one of the rare (and getting rarer) USB flash drives with a write protect switch that things go wonky. The Windows API call that the menu uses to extract icons from the programs is interpreted as a write and Windows will throw up the "Unable to write" warning quite a bit. Several of the apps themselves here do the exact same thing from flash drives in read-only mode.

Extra work has not been done in the menu or apps to support these drives as they are very few and far between and every manufacturer I've spoken with is discontinuing them due to lack of demand.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

PStart behaves the same. I

PStart behaves the same.

I have a brand new Buffalow 4gb USB Key with write protect switch.

Was hoping to run apps from a menu without enabling writes on the key for things like virus scanning. Looks like I'm will have to use windows explorer to launch them.

In trying to avoid virus infections and unnecessary writes

to my USB flash drive, which applications can run WITHOUT writing anything back to the drive? One of my flash drives has a write-protect switch.

I'd say

none.

Try Nu2Menu, just google

Try Nu2Menu, just google it.
Not as user friendly as PAM, you will have to manually configure the xml settings file for all the links. But I'm almost positive it will work.
