Making Commercial Apps portable!...

I was struck by an idea as I read a thread today about "Adobe InDesign" (not sure why it didn't occur to me earlier), and I thought I'd turn it into a thread. The thought here is this:
We all have commercial apps on our systems of one sort or another that we would LOVE to be able to use portably - most often on our workplace PCs. And yet most commercial apps - whether large or small - "install" onto our systems, and so are pretty much "stuck" there. Now over the years - being the inquisitive type that I am - I have experimented and found certain commercial apps that ARE (Lo and behold!) portable; however, they obviously do not advertise themselves as such. Moreover, there weren't many of such apps, and since discovering "portable apps" (the concept, not so much this specific site), I've largely abandoned any such further experiments.

Perhaps, tho', it is time to revisit the concept in this here thread. After all, this would allow an entire community (not just little ol' me) to contribute to such efforts, coming up with launchers and what all else to enable such great functionality in our installed apps. I'm aware that this may violate the license of some apps (those that license you only to have a SINGLE copy, 4x), however, there are many other apps whose licenses allow 2 or 3 copies, and/or are vague enuff to allow for same. I guess my guideline here would be to just state that it is up to any posters who contribute to check into those license issues before posting. Also, any links posted would be limited to those links leading to either
Angel An online explanation of HOW to make a given commercial app portable, or else
(b) A launcher for said app that you've come up with (or else someone else's that you discovered).

In no case would I encourage linking to warez (that is, downloadable versions of commercial apps - portable or otherwise), since that is illegal. The thought here is to be able to take commercial apps that *you* own and be able to use them portably.

That said, let's see what we all can come up with!

HA thats too funny. I

HA thats too funny.
I created a section on my website called "Make Your Own" to post scripts for folks to use that I couldn't legally distribute as exe's but would be perfectly legal for folks to "Make There Own".
I didn't post anything here as I thought we weren't allowed to create threads for launchers for commercial apps but could reply to a request if someone made one.

Well...

...you may be right on that "threads for launchers" bit; but if so, I wasn't aware of it till now. Even if that's correct, perhaps this thread would still be allowed, since it isn't a thread for "a" launcher, but is simply seeking links to launchers in general (that is, plural) and ALSO links to sites that have directions as to how you can tweak your own installed app to GET it to be portable.

I dunno, I guess I leave that decision up to John or Ryan. If I inadvertantly skirted any rules here, J or R, I apologize, and feel free to delete the thread. Your call. Thx.

Btw, Smitty, can you give a linky for that section of your own site? Thx.

I hesitate to post the link

I hesitate to post the link at this point as in my mind it is still a gray area as far as the rules are concerned.

If

the links on your main site lead to this area straightforwardly enuff, you can just give me your main site addy, and I'll take it from there.

EDIT:
Uh, nevermind. I found it.
Unfortunately, none of the scripts you have up there at present pertain to apps that I own:
PhotoShop 6?, No but I'd be interested in Paintshop Pro 7...
Dreamweaver 8? No but I'd be interested in NetObjects Fusion 5...
And so on...

Oh, well - that's what this here thread of mine is here for!!!...

mIRC.-

I have (and use) the launcher for mIRC... is not ilegal to do it since I don't modify any file... it works just like a shortcut (https://portableapps.com/node/6028)...

I'm also thinking if I can do the same with WinAmp, TeamSpeak, CDex (I think this one is open source), Screamer, Internet TV (JLC's Internet TV v1.0 Beta 5e), eMule, PhotoShop CS2, etc...
