Where's the *separate* GIMP Portable HELP installation file located?

I just downloaded the latest GIMP portable (v2.2.13). No *HELP* file included, because of its size, and said in a forum posting to be a separate download. Where can it be found for download? There really ought to be a distinct link to the help file download on the GIMP Portable web page.

There ain't one yet

There ain't one yet. Help isn't included with standard desktop GIMP either. Never has been. Probably never will be. Most people don't use it since Google is easier.

I haven't figured out how I want to package it yet. The full install of help files is 74.2MB. Yes, triple the size of GIMP Portable itself.

Google isn't ALWAYS easier.

I totally agree with your descision not to package the help
files with the application download.

The trouble is, the help files from gimp.org are not portable.
I just now tried to install them, and they want to access the
windows registry.

And that sucks. Maybe someone knows of a location where there
is a portable help package. (?)

Fear not

I'm already working on an NSIS-based installer for it using the newer setup routines. There will be one available for testing within a couple weeks. Smile

You was writing on April 26, 2007... that it would be a setup for help to portable Gimp help files in a couple of weeks, but I can't see it yet. Is it coming?

I found It!

I was looking for and Icon editor on google.com and found the help files on Source forge- tried to install it but it has an autofind feature and it found the one on my computer so I couldn't get it to go on my flash.

Dump the installer!

I believe that the only thing the installer does is look in the registry for the Gimp install directory. If that is the case then anyone who has Gimp installed on their PC can copy the help files from the ...\help\ directory on the PC to the portable directory ...PortableApps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\share\gimp\2.0\help\

It would be nice if the installer prompted the user when it can't find Gimp but that is a thread for the Gimp website...

If I have time, I will play around with the registry and see if I can trick GimpHelp into installing correctly.

(hint: Either I failed or I did not have the time if you don't see a further post.)

Found the registry key!

It looks like the help files look at only one registry key.

Here is what you need for Vista (It should be the same for XP but not tested)
Copy/paste this to a reg file and change the drive letter to add the key:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.0
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WinGimp-2.0_is1]
"Inno Setup: App Path"="F:\\PortableApps\\GIMPPortable\\App\\gimp"

Copy/paste this to remove the key when done installing:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.0
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WinGimp-2.0_is1]

IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND 100% OF WHAT I JUST SAID THEN DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS WORK AROUND. YOU CAN CRASH YOUR SYSTEM. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

If you do try this method create a restore point before attempting it. Again if you don't know what a "restore point" is - DO NOT TRY THIS WORK AROUND.

The typical "try at your own risk" disclaimers apply here. (besides, I don't have anything that is worth suing for.)

This worked well for me on

This worked well for me on Vista after I added a second string value, so the full key now reads:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WinGimp-2.0_is1]
"Inno Setup: App Path"="Y:\\PortableApps\\GIMPPortable\\App\\gimp"
"DisplayName"="Gimp 2.2.17"

You'll vary the version number when that changes, but you knew that, and all the help installer cares about is whether it's higher than 2.0.

Have fun,
Tim

No Time Right Now

The GIMP Help's installer sadly doesn't let you pick an install location (it should, but it doesn't). So a separate installer needs to be created. The full package of help files (all locales) is 74.2MB. Creating a PortableApps.com Installer that handles each locale separately is a couple hours of work... and I don't have it right now for the few people that need the help files. Plus, the GIMP Portable installer doesn't allow for those help files being there.

Realistically, GIMP's help installer should be updated to allow you to select an install location rather than maintaining a separate help installer.

If someone wants a quick installer that installs all the help files for all locales, I can put that together relatively quickly....

UPDATE: Try this (once the download works):
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/GIMP_Help_0.11_PRERELEASE....

I tested the help file, and

I tested the help file, and the only thing I found is if there wasn't an open firefox session a windows notepad window opened up with what I assume is launcher information.

Other then that, it seems to work well.

Gimp Help 2

Go here.

http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

I'd suggest downloading the "(as single file, 39924 kB)" file...

You can then use Universal Extractor -- http://legroom.net/software/uniextract

to extract the files from the exe.

if uniextract doesn't work you may need the latest version of innounp.exe found here
http://www.jrsoftware.org/isdl.php

Once it's extracted you've got a folder "help" burried a few folders deep

{app}\share\gimp\2.0\help

which you can copy to your \GIMPPortable\App\gimp\share\gimp\2.0\ folder.

The help folder contains several folders you will need "images" and "sv" to stay, all the rest are languages. "en" for english etc. You will need to keep the language folders that you are likely to use. The rest you can delete.

Good luck.
