Splash Screen Usage

John, this is basicially a question for you, nobody else can really answer this, but only give an opinion.

You made the launcher for Micrsoft's On-Screen Keyboard.

Well, as my first portableapp, I suggested to someone else last night to try to make something simple like a launcher for Microsoft's Calculator.

Well, then I said, hey, why I don't I give it a shot.

So, I took your .nsi script from On-Screen Keyboard Portable, and switched everything with calc.exe, and it seems to work fine. Also, I wasn't sure if it also needed a seperate calculator for Win 9X because I didn't know wheather Win 9X doesn't support the launcher, or just doesn't have a calculator.

I made a splash for the program, you can see it here:

There we go. Much clearer. Edit: Link does no longer work. Question answered basically.

-Click it to enlarge.

So, I'm asking, could this have potential for an official PortableApp from PortableApps.com after some testing, so people can pop open the calculator quickly and do some quick math when needed. I know you haven't used it yet, but would a calculator be wanted in the applications list? What I want is to know if I can post it in the beta forums WITH that splash? I give like 99% credit to you, because I didn't really do much.

I made the calculator image in the splash myself, so there's no problem there. I know the splash is a litte rough, but it will do for now.

This is a question for everybody-I need to create the icon for the file and in the menu, I have one, just don't know how to save or convert it to be an icon. It creates and icon when I save it as .ico, but it doesn't work with the launcher....

You can't use the splash until John gives you explicit permission.
On that topic, John, can you send me the splash source real quickly? It should only take 2 seconds and I'd be ever so grateful. Smile

WRT the icon, send the pic. to me and I'll do it.

Yea I know.

That's why I'm asking, maybe I can release it after I get the icons done, and people can test it, then see if I can use the splash. Ok, I'll send the pic now, thanks.

That I did. I've just been a little swamped with emails (oh no, I'm turning into John!) and been busy doing some stuff for Bill.

Question...

John's launcher for On-Screen Keyboard also includes a different On-Screen Keyboard for Windows 9X versions. I assume this is because they didn't have that feature. So, can I remove the coding for that from the launcher of do I have to change it and add in another open-source calculator for Windows 9X. (I don't think I do, but I'm just checking).

B.T.W.-Who's Bill. You'de have to expect me to ask, you can't just go around going I've been busy doing stuff for Bill and expect me not to ask. Blum

I'm almost 95% sure that Win95 has the calculator. So, yes you can remove it.

I figure...

I'll just ask all my questions for the app in this forum rather than starting a new one.

Well for one, I have a question above about the Win 9x Version.

Next, I serached on these forums, and on the web, an can't find out how to make a 7-Zip self-extractor. I also checked out the program itself of course I found some paquet builed thing, but I'm thinking there's a different way. So how do I make a 7-Zip self extractor.

Next, for the help file in the program package, I was just going to include and HTML file for the webpage I post the beta release on. Only thing is, I'm having troubles, I don't know what to do properly. All I tried was in the browser, View-Source. And saved it in notepad as help.html, but when I click to open it, the webpage doesn't dsiplay correctly.

So, those are my questions for now, if anybody could help me out, I would be very greatful. Thanks!

easy

If you create an archive in 7-Zip, there is a frame called options and in this frame you can check a checkbox called "create SFX archive".
That's the one.

Could someone...

Also please answer the question about the HTML file. I'm sorry to ask again. It's just now that it's been replied to, I'm afraid people will miss it.

Use save as

Using firefox just visit the page and do ctrl + s and it will save the page with all necessary pics, css, js etc in a .htm file and folder with the same name. If there are any other links they will point to the actual site unless you edit them. There are programs that'll let you rip entire sites I just don't know of any good ones off hand.

Ok thanks.

That's all I need. Thanks Pontus Nilsson, I'll give it a shot.

Edit: Wait. That was a dumb question by me.

I need the page to be displayed as it is updated, not as it was when I saved it.

Anybody know how?

Or is it not possible?

AND...

Sorry, but some more questions.

How does John add different icons to the 7-Zip Self Extractors, and the text that says, "PortableApps Directory on portable device suggested". Is this hard to do? I mainly wanna change the icon.

And I did have another question. But I've forgotten it now...:(

ResHacker

Get ResHacker.
You need to click on the Icon part then click Action » Replace Icon.
For the text, it's String Table » 13. Edit the text (207) then click compile script.

New Question. :)

How does the version number work?

An expample would be nice.

Like does it start...

1.0.0.0

Then make a change

1.0.1.0

Like, which numbers change, and by how much, and in what order, and for what reason?

.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning:
major.minor.revision.build
Build is for use with stuff like nightly builds, so unless you are using CVS or SVN, leave that as 0.
Revision is for bug fixes.
Minor is for minor changes, i.e. adding a few features, fixing a heap of bugs etc
Major is for major changes, i.e. adding a lot more features, overhauling the interface, changing engines/programming languages
In principle, in subsequent releases, the major number is increased when there are significant jumps in functionality, the minor number is incremented when only minor features or significant fixes have been added, and the revision number is incremented when minor bugs are fixed. A typical product might use the numbers 0.9 (for beta software), 0.9.1, 0.9.2, 0.9.3, 1.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.1, 1.1.1, 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.1, 2.1.1, 2.1.2, 2.2, etc. Developers may at times jump (for example) from version 5.0 to 5.5 to indicate that significant features have been added, but not enough to warrant incrementing the major version number.
