Possible?

I was wondering if it would be possible to copy all of the files from the CD partition of a U3 drive to the Removable Disk portion of the U3 drive, and remove the U3 part, so there is only a removable disk left, with the files from the cd (that no longer exists) on it, and have the U3 menu run from those files. So, in a nutshell, I'd like to keep the U3 menu, but not have the CD partition. Is there any form of this that could be possible?

Nope

The CD partition is what U3 runs from.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

If you do, the autorun

If you do, the autorun function will be a hit and miss game like a standard USB drive.

From the MS FAQ programmer page...
The removable media device setting is a flag contained within the SCSI Inquiry Data response to the SCSI Inquiry command. Bit 7 of byte 1 (indexed from 0) is the Removable Media Bit (RMB). A RMB set to zero indicates that the device is not a removable media device. A RMB of one indicates that the device is a removable media device. Drivers obtain this information by using the StorageDeviceProperty request.

In a nutshell... the partition behaves just like a CDROM so autorun functions.

Did you know that the entire operating system use to fit on a 5 1/4" floppy disk!

I don't have to have autorun

It really wouldn't matter to me if I had autorun or not. Would it be possible if there was no worry about autorun? I tried copying the files from the CD partition to my desktop, and running it from there, with my U3 drive plugged in and not plugged in, and it wouldn't run, so there must be some sort of way to do it if it is possible.

Had to learn some more on U3

Had to learn some more on U3 drives. You may lose data so always backup your drive before missing around with partitions. Go to the U3 website and download the uninstaller.. http://www.u3.com/uninstall/default.aspx

This will uninstall the u3 iso partition and resize the main partition for you. They also have a installer if you decide to reinstall the U3 partition.

If you're interested in the how-to.. http://www.mcgrewsecurity.com/research/hackingU3/

Very interesting how this is done... I may try to create a installer for a none U3 drive.

Tried It

I tried it today, and the launchpad gave me and error, and would not start, so I guess it needs the other partition to be able to.

True

What you see to copy off the U3 drive is not all of it. The U3 partition has the rest of the program. Looking in the iso, the main program is there, not out where you can get to it.

And no, it wont work outside the scandisk drive. It looks for it.
