a Texas Hold'em Poker game?
I found a GPL'd and could portabalise it.

It's PokerTH, looks OK. QT is fairly portable already so it'd just be the actual game you need to worry about.

its PokerTH.
I doesn't leave Registry entries, only files in %APPDATA%
BTW: Is there a way in NSIS to copy a whole folder with all files inside? I searched around and didn't find anything useful.

if the computer you are running the portable version already has PokerTH installed? How does John do it with FFPE?

The Launcher copies to local stuff elsewhere copies your settings to the %APPDATA% folder, and after the you finished your gaming session, the Launcher copies your stuff back to the thumbdrive and the local stuff back to %APPDATA%

So that's the "work around". I was thinking of doing some program portable, I just didn't know how to deal with the %appdata% folder it created if there was already one there. But renaming the existing is good. But back to John's way of doing it... He claims that if FFPE or the computer crashes, there's nothing left on the computer. Does anybody know how he handles that?

It depends on the App.
Some apps, and I think Firefox is one of them, give you the ability to specify the datapath (that's the folder they write their stuff to). So you just include that into your Launcher and say to FF: "write your data to $datapath". And before you did that, you specified the $datapath variable.
I think that's how John gets FF not to write any personal data to the local drive.

He uses a command-line switch. Not many programs have these, but when they do, they are usually very easy to change the path. That's the reason I did RSSOwl Portable
If an app has a hard-coded path like $APPDATA\.mysettings, the best practise is to rename it to $EXEDIR\Data\backup
