Make way for Pidgin

So under increasing pressure and threats of a lawsuit from AOL, Gaim has announced they are changing their name to Pidgin.

While I'm not opposed to them changing their name......Pidgin, seriously? That doesn't even make sense.

typo

haha, ya, the "Pigdim" was a typo :/ I wasn't quite awake when I typed that note.

I know what a Pigdin is, I just still think it's a stupid name for Gaim to change to.

Kinda accurate

Given the faux English that passes for IM conversation, I think its somewhat appropriate.

Err...

w/ the l33t sp33k on im, is all good.

It makes more sense if you read these:

and

arstechnica.com | Pidgin 2.0
"We like the name," Egan told me. "It was the second choice we all really liked. We were thinking up linguistic terms, and someone mentioned Pidgin. Another developer commented that 'corrupted language' may not be the best thing to associate yourself with, to which another pointed out something along the lines of 'have you ever SEEN people talk on IM?"

Haha =)

I love the name. It reminds me of the Pokemon, Pidgey.

Pidgin

I love the name and it does make sense to keep it as far away from the other IM programs as possible.

Pidgin Portable

I hope John gets this compiled for PortableApps soon, I ran it off of my flash drive last night, while it was logging to my local C: directory and I tell you what, that code is FAST. If only I could get it to stay self-contained I'd be happy, but not yet. In the meantime I'll be waiting.

A quick fix

You can find it here. Just a quick fix for my personal use, remember to upgrade to the "real" one.

Nice

That is a nice compilation. I haven't had any issues yet. I will be sure to upgrade to the Official version when it comes out.

Official Instructions on how to install Pidgin on your USB.

I tried this this morning and it worked great. Does anyone now what the status on having a Portable Apps launcher for this is?

Two other steps...

Thanks for that pointer! I followed those instructions and it seems to be working just fine. I copied the Pidgin stuff into "[thumbdrive]:/PortableApps/PidginPortable" and the GTK and Aspell stuff into their own respective directories in /PortableApps.

A couple other steps let me add Pidgin to the PortableApps Launch menu.

First, rename pidgin-portable.exe to pidgin-portable.paf.exe. Then click the "Install a New App" in the Options menu and select the pidgin-portable.paf.exe file.

Why does everybody hate it so much?

Dangit, pidgin is a common language, like Pidgin is a common language for MSN, AIM, Yahoo, etc. It makes sense. Also, it makes for a good mascot/logo thing. And IMO, it sounds pretty cool - a lot better than Gaim. The only problem being a common problem with programs is that when you google "Pidgin" you get all kinds of stuff, not just the chat program. But they're hardly alone in that.
Portable...
Firefox, Pidgin/Gaim, GIMP, AbiWord, VLC, 7zip.
Also: WinFrotz, FCEUltra, DOSBox, FSCapture, XVI32, Notepad++, Audacity, Siren, Winamp

I have more and more

I have more and more thoughts why there is no official portable pidgin on this page but a few new and less important apps. Because a nda or other sucky reason is very unlikely I think maybe john don`t want to create new screens hots of the suite for the page or want to rename the forum. This seams to afford more work then just creating portable pidgin.

Umm....John posted a pre-release pidgin portable in the beta forums, i think that makes it official. my guess is the less important ones came out first because they were easier to do and didnt require as much testing.
