How Bad Is Your PortableApps.com Addiction?

Tell us about how PortableApps.com and PortableApplications are taking over your life.

Eg.I once tried to type in PortableApps.com as my password for my Hotmail account.

Any many other humiliating events. Tell us yours!

Oh!

And one time, I was thinking, hmm, what would be a good theme for the PAM, and then I'm like, WHOA! How bout a PortableApps theme for the PAM.

And it took me a while.

Then I'm like. Wow. I'm an IDIOT.

PortableApps consumes about 70% of my internet time and 40% of my I'm-sitting-in-fromt-of-my-Computer-time.
Is that much???

I think I can because the 2 numbers aren't referring to the same base. I'm not always in the internet (i.e. browsing around) when sitting-on-ass so I think its possible.

Portable App addiction

I sell USB flash drives among other things.
Nary a flash drive sale is made that doesn't come with a plug for portable applications!

What's cool is that I usually have my drive plugged into a POS machine when I'm working and I can directly demonstrate for folks who are interested.

It's the kind of thing that makes 'em bump the capacity up on their flash drive purchase, and that ain't a bad thing.

move half of my flashdrives data (not the PortableApps.com proggs!) to another flashdrive cause John released the OOO test release.
Now I have about 600mb proggys there.

Especially when you connect them to USB1. Additionally to very poor transfer rate you get a seek delay Sad
My (currently) only portable device is a MP3 player with 2.5 inch drive...And I can't say I like it - It has enough space to store DVD's on it, but big, slow and...loud Sad

Pretty bad

The first thing I do when I get to work, besides opening Autocad to pretend that I'm working, is come to the forums, read all new posts, again before lunch, again after lunch, before I leave work, and a few more times in between. Sometimes I get really bored when there's nothing new to read. I just don't feel like working sometimes.

Hi...

My name is Patrick Patience. Ever since I was introduced to PortableApps.com, I feel like a different person. My parents, friends, and family...they all treat my like some kind of freak with problems. Sometimes, when nobody's watching, I sneak over to my laptop for a quick visit to PortableApps.com. I've tried to cut down my time spent at PortableApps.com, I really have, but...it's just SO addicting. It makes me feel warm.

Kinda backed off.

At one point I was obsessed with reading EVERY post and everything new here. I have just stuck with the topics that interest me now. It was getting hard to keep up with the # of new posts and topics. Ryan is right though, I had a hard time explaining to my wife why a 13yr old kid would be interested in hosting a web site for me and what the heck a PAM Theme is.

You, Ryan, do have an addiction, face it. I too open every topic, just to see if there's any new info, or if someone needs help on something simple that I can do. But most of the time I just open and close without reading the whole thing.

External HD. and more

I set up an external USB HD too.

I (legally) salvaged a store demo Magellan Roadmate 700's 1.8-inch Toshiba 20GB HD and found a company that provides USB 2.0 enclosures for them.
Seems that the same drive is used in 20GB iPods too.

I've copied over the contents of my 4GB flash drive, the 6.5GB of MP3s from my player and a bunch of movies with a little over 5GB to spare.

The drive is no speed demon, but seems to work for the stuff I've been doing with it and ended up costing under 30 bucks.

It makes me want to set up a bare-bones system built specifically around a paired-down Windows XP setup and apps located on removable drives for some reason.
I dunno why, just to tinker with I guess.
I came close to picking up a a used Dell Optiplex machine from Ebay for the purpose, but a laptop might be a good candidate too.

PortableApps.comaholic!!!

Good morning, my name is Andrés Bracho and I don't know if I'm a "PortableApps.comaholic"... Blum Is that the correct way to start this post?

I'll tell my story...

I start reading and studing about open source a couple of years ago when there was an International congress on Open source software (in Venezuela) (I'm in the process to migrate my personal computers to Linux... Kubuntu).

Then my brother told me about Firefox... I felt in love with firefox...!!!

Then my brother told me that he had Firefox portable... my question was, why I need my bookmarks with me? he showed me this page and I downloaded PFirefox to try it... then PThunderbird (more necesary for me)... then... now I have almost everything... and use to check on google for portable apps at least once a week...

One day I had to sign up to participate in the translation's topic (I did the Latin American Spanish translation to PAM) and... I'm still here...

Today, I removed every app in my laptop and desktop if I have it in a portable version... I don't even use my office's Apps if I have a portable replacement... and I use to install some PApps in my colleagues and friends' thumbdrives.

I'm a Veterinarian and the way I explain to my colleagues how my pendrive works (with all the PApps) is that my pendrive is a parasite or a virus... it uses the OS and energy from a host computer but don't need it for anything else... Wink

I also use to say that my computer is my pendrive... the rest is just electricity and interface... Smile

Once I went to visit my parents, and when I came back here (four hours trip driving) I discover that I leaved my pendrive at my parents house... my father had to send it to me trough MRW in less than 24 hours just because I was so affraid that I was saying that without my pendrive I was death... without even a brain...

First thing every morning, I check my mails and this forum... I use to read everithing and just login if I want to answer or post something... now I always login but check "recent posts" only... Also check again at noon and before leaving the office.

Am I a "PApps.comaholic"???? I don't know... you tell me...

Uh! My list of portable apps is in the "What's on your portable" post... with the only addition of Portable Bookmarks... Why do I need to take my bookmarks with me? I think I already answered that... lol

Nice

Here's my story. It's shorter, though.

One day, I was at school and I was sitting and staring at the stupid Blocked by WebSense page. I though: "There has got to be a way around this." I had tried online translators to get around it, but they were not the effect I was looking for.

Back at home, I had upgraded to Fedora Core 6 recently, and I got a new version of Firefox, which I had been using for about a year.

Back at school, a word popped into my head: "proxy". I climbed into the Intenet Options of IE (our school computers don't have Firefox), and to my dismay, there were no such options, they were blocked. It was then when I realized how much I hated IE, Windows, and Microsoft in general.

The naughty boy I was, I decided to download Firefox onto the school computers. In the middle of the download, a fellow friend came by and told me that it was a bad idea, and that I shouldn't install it on the hard drive, in case something happened. I started looking for a solution. I asked around and was told by a 9th grader of Firefox Portable. From there you can guess the rest of the story. I set up the proxy, and am happy right now.

Anyway, I used FP for a while, and decided to check back to PortableApps.Com to see what else they had. Then, I singed up on the forums, and became an addict. Soon, I started developing my own portable apps for linux.

Smile Keep up the good work, y'all!

Heh.

I tried the same thing.
This year, they amended the school policy so that any drive which you use on a school computer becomes property of the school. No software is allowed to be run off these drives as it is "not optimized [sic] for network performance and leaves files on the computer". I explained to them about FFP, and they said "No, the network can not handle it". Next day, I see 2 grade 12 students bring in a game, which was not portable on their USB drives and used a lot of system resources and the technicians even had a go!
Oh wells. Smile

Oh, and 9th graders told you? I told 9th graders Biggrin

Buhhh Ryan

You are the first one to make this post tooooooo long for one page. Sad

I really hate that as the "new posts" links dont work on the second/third page any more.

Er

I think it is the disease called by Feynman: every day, every hour and every minute you are busy doing one thing -- searching any new portable app, I am playing with PotableApps.com, always!

Actually, it's gotten so bad

Actually, it's gotten so bad that I check your downloads page to see if anyone is hosting anything and they haven't posted it here .
