I guess that would be, ummm..., coolish. It's really nothing important to me.

Seriously, I was thinking about doing what Spread Firefox does.

You shouldn't bump topics.
And yes it is. You have to create extra tables within the database and write a custom forum module though.

You know darn well he means he hates lookin at em. I do, too, as they distract from the actual content. I can't imagine anyone enabling them without an easy way for users to turn them off.
All that said, I'm working on a way to get them in here but without having them be too distracting. I think Digg has a solid balance on it with their 16x16 personal icons.

I know what you mean, but we're talking about avatars here. That's an unreleased add-on for Drupal. Closed source. And it's not user-uploadable. It's for mods only. It's not an avatar.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
In my opinion avatars that have 16x16 pixels hardly make sence
Maybe a picture in account info then? It's not avatar, but it's in no way distracting...and better than nothing.
"Those people who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do." Asimov
See Digg for what I mean. The full size is in the profile. The 16x16 shows up with the comments right next to their name. It allows personalization without the ridiculous animated blinking avatars that are ever-present in most forums. Those avatars make it harder to read the text (it's harder to read when there is unrelated motion in your field of vision) which is something we definitely don't want here. Even un-animated avatars, if they are large, make it more difficult to follow along a page. But most forums have them in the same locations, along with lots of extra buttons and links and text because most forums have them in the same locations, along with lots of extra buttons and links and text.
I just haven't figured out an easy way to make em be both yet in Drupal. It will require a custom module. So, I may let people upload 32s or 48s and just show them as 16s on the forum pages. It will probably be JPG only to prevent those annoying animated GIFs. I may try a couple different things and let people test them as I don't want to increase the load time on the forum pages either.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I know this is a community forum with a dictator, but lets not use avatars. I usually shy away from forums that have them. Are you supposed to think more or less of someone because of what their avatar looks like? I thought most of us here enjoyed posting because this was a very action oriented, focused group. As many of you have discovered recently we have many young members that do great work. I know that many of the people who don't pay much attention to the forums regularly would not know that. I don't think they would care. I think you might risk the respect that people have for your advice or even the validity of it if you have a silly bear, ninja, superhero, etc next to your user id.
John it's kinda like keeping the guns or alcohol out of the house. You know nothing bad will happen if you do. Moderators would have one more thing to keep track of also. John and the other mods have many more important things to worry about and work on.
PLEASE. No Avatars!

That's why they'd be small. Only 16x16. It's going to be an experiment -- a trial -- when I get the time to play with it. And we'll see if people like it or not. I think it will be enough to add just a hint of personality without being distracting. But we'll know when we try it. I won't do standard forum avatars here. I think they're a distraction. So, again, take a peak at Digg for an example of what I mean. I think it strikes a good balance.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
If they are all kept under, say, /uploads/community/avatars/ then we could use AdBlock Plus to block them.
Anyway, I'm just gonna use a cube. Nice and un-distracting. Except those spinning ones.
Or maybe a piece of chalk. Hehe.

I saw Digg. Ang I don't like it. I think that these 16x16 avatars are just to be, probably some graphics designers are able to make a good 16x16 avatar, but most people aren't. And 48x48...big enough to do something with it, but why not something bigger?
"Those people who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do." Asimov
I dont like avatars either, but the 16x16 are not that bad, but if votes are being take, I vote for not having them.

Spread Firefox just has it for specific names (the mods, etc). This would be a user-uploadable icon that shows up for all comments ala Digg.

Community with a dictator. You are the boss. Still don't like the Digg ones, even though they are small. Kinda like being a little pregnant.
Would there me a default one if you don't set one?
