Brutal Chess Portable 0.5.2 Pre-Release 1

This is just a quick n dirty one. Compressed with a stub launcher and the C runtimes moved around. But it's a cool chess program. In 3d. And it's portable. Just hit ESC to bring up the menu to adjust settings, difficulty or exit. It doesn't maintain settings (The app itself doesn't do this yet). And it'll be slow on older PC hardware since it is 3d. But any PC made in the last few years should have no issues with it.

Download Brutal Chess Portable 0.5.2 Pre-Release 1

UPDATE: Almost forgot, right-click your mouse and move around to rotate and spin the board. It's kinda cool.

2 quick observations

Is it supposed to retain settings between sessions? Resolution, shadows etc.

It seems to be really sloooowwww. Not in the launch, just in the program itself.

Nope

It doesn't yet maintain settings. It's an early release.

It uses 3d. So a system that's older than, say, 3 years will be slow with it. but anything with a semi-modern graphics card will have no issues. I even got it working in a virtual machine in Win98 and it was slow but semi-usable. How slow IS your computer?

Works

and has a nice look.
But for now, I prefer Ryan's Winboard.
And it's probably the smallest Launcher you ever released... Wink

Great, but I will have to

Great, but I will have to agree with Simeon, right now, Winboard is better for me.

Yeh

I like WinBoard Portable better too Wink
On that topic, John needs to send me back the splash Wink
And on that topic, I need to send a copy of RnDP to John so he can work out why it doesn't work.
And on that topic, Brutal Chess Portable doesn't work on my computer. I think something is stuffed with ExecWait on my computer.
Any ideas anyone?

Did you finish it?

I think I mentioned I'd done Winboard a while back. I just never did anything with it. I didn't think there was much interest.

Yep

Ready to go, just needs the splash.
And you didn't mention it Wink
Anyway, I might send a copy of RnDP to you tomorrow, just to test, seeing as ExecWait doesn't work on my computer.

I fail...

...to see the attraction, really, in touting a chess game as being in "3D".

I play chess, but fer cryin' out loud, ppl play chess over the MAIL, it's that much strategy and that little amt of "action". If there was ever a game that cried out to not be made in 3D, it's chess.

Lots of people like it

Lots of people like it that way. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean there aren't lots and lots that do. More casual players than anything else.

Personally, I only play chess over a beer with a buddy. I only know the logic of chess that I get from playing it a bit here and there. It doesn't appeal to me enough to delve deeper into it. I wouldn't enjoy playing it over email at all.

It is too slow. I don't have a slow computer. It is only two years old and is still a fast computer.

Integrated Graphics

Most likely, it has integrated graphics. Even if you have a modern PC, if you don't have an actual graphics card, 3d stuff like this simply won't run well. Most real graphics cards come with solid OpenGL drivers. Most integrated cards don't. Brutal Chess uses OpenGL (a cross-platform graphics standard) but lesser video renderers don't always handle it well.

OpenGL?

Does NVidia still ship solid OpenGL in their drivers or not? If not, then nothing that uses OpenGL will run well.

I'm using an older ATI 9800 Pro (older than yours) and it runs perfectly. But I know I have solid OpenGL support.

Small.
Was there any point in actually making a launcher?

Yup

Without the launcher, the directories can't be in the proper format and it's not a PAF app.

Haha.

That's what I told him when he asked me the same thing when I made Calculator Portable.

Which I'm still trying to make without the settings, cause there are none. Maybe this launcher would be a better choice to edit. But nice game, I love the angle thing. Have you thought about something simpilar like portable checkers for people who aren't so good with chess?

Portable Checkers... hmmm...

Portable Checkers... hmmm... not many on SourceForge. They were almost all just platforms to play network chess, not an actual chess board and emulator.

A way to make this perform better

Just disable the the reflections and shadows, after I did that it performed better.

Thats a good idea

It really helps as my Laptop at work is slow.

Well

It is nice but a little slow. And i do not like its background, too dark to see the black.(Any way to change it?) One more thing, right click the mouse disabled.

BrutalChess and I do not believe there are any updates as the last version as I recall was 0.5.2

Stop the flaming.

A flame war developed between vf2nsr and z25blink in the next dozen comments and then started to spread to the rest of the thread (and was getting rapidly out of control). I have deleted it all.

This is an official warning to both vf2nsr and z25blink: stop it or you will be banned.
