I have downloaded the Portable OpenOffice.org from your site here. I used thie one becuase the U3 version seemed to be 3 times a large.
The U3 version of FF seems to run faster. Is there any advantage to using either version?

Actually, you'll find Portable Firefox 1.5 and Mozilla Firefox for U3 1.5 launch in nearly the exact same amount of time. They use nearly identical code (I know, I coded the U3 version). Both are faster than Portable Firefox 1.0 due to a faster underlying Firefox.
The OpenOffice.org for U3 version is larger due to inefficiencies in the U3 framework that will hopefully be resolved in a later release of the U3 Launchpad. It actually adds about 75MB to in the install size that could be removed... but it would violate U3 certification to do so.

The difference on my end probably has more to do with the Upgraded USB Flash Drive. I was using Portable FF 1.5 on a Lexar 128mb that was over a year old. My new GeekSquad 512mb U3 seems much faster overall. I will stick with your version of OpenOffice.org.
One more question.
Does anybody have any guess on life expentancy for a flash drive if it is used for portable apps?
I am concerned because I have heard that they cannot handle the read write for very long.

Newer drives space writes out over the drive, evening out lifespan. I'd wager you'll get at least a few years out of a drive if you used it every day to run apps.

Thanks again for your quick responses. A few years is forever in the computer business.

The diff between the portable versions here and the U3 ones?
Also where do get the U3 versions?
I use a USB 40GB harddrive most of the time, so does U3 make diff for that? Or is only for flash drives?
U3 is a platform that only works on U3-branded thumbdrives, so it would not be an option for your 40GB USB drive. The U3 apps I've been packaging are nearly identical to the standard ones I have available (they use the same code) but they integrate into the U3 launchpad.
