Thunderbird U3 and Vista

I recently upgraded my U3 driver to 1.4, but I am still having a hard time running Thunderbird U3. First of all, the autostart can't find thunderbird.exe, and when I go in and run thunderbird.exe, the program acts like a clean install (i.e. prompts me to create a new account and won't show my other accounts). Any help with getting my thunderbird to work?

P.S. this is for my new Vista laptop

Upgrade

Reinstall TB for U3 right over itself. It sounds like it got corrupted somehow. If U3 won't let you, you may need to manuall extract files from the U3P (a zip file) and place them within the right directories.

Vista is not supported by PortableApps.com's current U3 apps. I believe it may exhibit the behavior you are describing on Vista but can not be sure.

I would like to keep my mail...If I were to reinstall, would I lose it? Regarding your quote: how would I go about doing so? Thunderbird seems to work fine on XP, but acts like a brand new install on Vista.

Vista Unsupported

Does your current install work ok on XP? If so, it's fine. The current release DOES NOT WORK ON VISTA.

Nope

We are currently evaluating whether or not it's worth supporting the proprietary U3 platform going forward and have not updated the U3 apps in some time. Thunderbird Portable, the open, more-popular package on which Thunderbird for U3 is based, was updated for use with Vista back in November.

Is the file size worth it?

Is the portable version any larger than the U3 version? can it be started from the Launchpad? I saw a forum before I logged in re: transferring mail from portable to u3, can you provide that link again?

Smaller

The portable version is smaller than the U3 version. All portable apps are smaller their U3 counterparts due to the way U3 works. The U3 launchpad is a closed system and won't allow you to create shortcuts to other apps. There's a U3 shortcut creator and a couple other things out there that can do it, but they aren't supported here.

You can directly transfer your Thunderbird for U3 profile to Thunderbird Portable. Your TB for U3 profile is here:
X:\System\Apps\FEFECB84-0E05-42d8-B044-F2D0FCFF8C15\Data\profile

Just copy those files into Thunderbird Portable's profile directory (usually):
X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile

Be sure to then delete this file:
X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable\Data\Settings\ThunderbirdPortableSettings.ini

... so that it will automatically reconfigure your profile for you.

Transferring U3 to Portable Apps

I have just upgraded to Vista and cannot get Thunderbird U3 to work in the U3 environment. Reinstalling didnt help either!

I have now installed Portable Apps version but want to transfer all my settings and mailboxes to Portable Apps.

I tried transfering the profile as above, but each time I run TB Portable Apps it asks me to set up my mailboxes again. I thought that ig I copied prefs.js that would do it, perhaps I copied it to the wrong place.

Please help as I cant read any mail now Wink

WHOLE profile

As already stated, you need to copy your entire profile. Not just your mail folders and prefs.js. All the files in one profile folder to the other profile folder. Please re-read the directions and follow them exactly.

Here

X:\System\Apps\FEFECB84-0E05-42d8-B044-F2D0FCFF8C15\Data\profile\Mail

Just copy the whole profile folder over to /PortableApps/ThunderbirdPortable/Data
and your Mails should be copied with the rest of the profile.

Normally

the portable installation doesn't delete folders.
It just creates a new one.
