Help - stuck on 600x800 screen portableapps window not sizeable

Found this, and it is great. Only issue I am using on a PC installed in my car with a 800x600 wide touch screen. The window for the portableapps is too big and goes off the screen. Any thoughts on allowing resize of window or horizontal bar? Hide option for the options and mt docs etc?

Love the app just wish I could use it in the car and then bring to the desktop.

Thanks!

What are you seeing?

Even though the menu is a bit taller than a standard 800x600 screen with the task bar shown, it's designed to just lose the top little bit of the rounded corners. Still fully functional with no impact to the usability. It's actually designed like this so it still works just fine with minimal impact to its look.

Here's a screenshot of what it should look like on 800x600. This is on Windows 98, actually.

I am running a lilipute 8" wide screen. I don't get the height, will post back when I can get to my car. Smile

Ah

In that case, it isn't 600 high then. That's a *really* tight space to work in. And the % of people running at that resolution is way less than 1%.

That said, I'd be curious if there are others out there with this issue. I've got a couple features coming up in later releases that may help... or at least be a decent work-around.

Indeed, the menu is usable

Indeed, the menu is usable at 800x600, but it still doesn't look all that nice cut off like it is. I'd rather see it fit comfortably. As it is, it's bigger than the Vista Start menu. A "portable menu" shouldn't be outdoing the OS's own main menu. Wink

It was debated

But being able to see 20 icons in the list seems like a much better choice. Especially since you only lose a few pixels off the top. (And there will actually be some more stuff in that top part in a later release). And the fact that almost no one runs 800x600 anymore (which is also evident in the fact that most websites won't even view right in that resolution these days). In short, it was function over form for the small number of outliers without impacting both the form and function for the other 99%.

The only time I've encountered an 800x600 screen in the last year is my sister's 8 year old laptop that barely works.

...

I've tried higher resolutions numerous times, but every time it's so vast I feel like I'm swimming. 800x600 is nice and cozy and most apps (even Office 2007!) still work just fine with that setting. I guess part of it is because I like to maximize everything (my OCD would have me tweaking window sizes and positions forever otherwise) and almost all apps look bare maximized at 1280x1024 and above. Smile

I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if Windows' DPI scaling worked right, but it doesn't. Tray icons look absolutely HORRIBLE when scaled, and most other icons get butchered to some extent, as well.

True

Windows' DPI scaling was such a horrible afterthought. I cringe whenever I use my dad's laptop with it's jagged little icons everywhere and handful of programs that display messed up (like MSN).

Since there are probably a few other folks out there like Bruce, I'll re-examine it a bit with my graphics designer and see if there's a way to cut things down a hair. He's out of the country at the moment, so it'll be next week.

Are you using a pre-XP or XP with the classic theme? It seems it almost fits when the shadow is disabled (an option in the next release). I may key that to auto-disable on low-res screens.

Solution

Here's what you need:
C/C++ Version of PAM

Download the latest one (USBAppsMenu32.zip), and use that. To see the rest of menu, you can just drag it around.

Hope it works!!

Not sure what happened and

Not sure what happened and or how to use the apps you linked.
But here is what I see with the standard install on my 8"widescreen and what the display looks like with the blackbox app but on my laptop. It doesn't show the app icons.

Umm. Okay, next time, use

Umm. Okay, next time, use the PrtScrn key. That'd be much better than taking a picture of your screen with a camera. Blum Pressing PrtScrn copies an image of the screen to the clipboard, which you can paste into an image editor (Paint will suffice) and save.

Too small

Quite simply, your screen is too small. It's not even 800x600. You're actually running at 640x480. Unfortunately, not much supports that resolution these days.

You're going to be better off manually launching the individual apps for now.

Thanks for all the help folks!

Thanks,
I will run using the app itself for now then, it is soo close though. A scroll bar and ability to shrink the menu would be a nice feature. for the 1% of folks like me Smile

Thanks again!

The reason.

The blacbox version of the menu looked like that is two reasons:

1.You did not put the executable and start files in the right place.

AND/OR

2.You do not have the latest beta version of the PortableApps Menu which supports theming.

Oh, and the version, if you press the "S" key, it'll collapse the menu, it's not shriking, but I thot I'd let you know.

Actually

640x480 is only 0.17% and falling worldwide... at least of web users:
http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2007/April/res.php

That's why you won't find much that works with it these days.

Yeah but

Yeah but I bet something like 80% of people who use 640x480 don't have the net. Blum (Elderly, etc.)

...Anyway try PStart. It's a lot smaller, so it should fit on your screen.. I think.

Hi All
I'm using 800 by 480 now... It's in UMPC from Samsung. I get the annoyance... Some [censored] microsoft products don't work at this resolution...

is there a way to make the menu smaller instead of occupying half of the whole screen when in resolution 800 x 600?
