There is for the desktop Environment a program called Blackbox. If I remember correctly there was a discussion on this forum where someone made it portable
I really don't know about the rest (Except the virtual pc. For that just use qemu)
..."Live Linux Distro"
Could've seen that coming...

...and could you've seen THIS one coming?:
"Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows"
Granted, it's a $50 piece of software, but my dad and uncle both use and love MojoPac found at http://www.mojopac.com/portal/content/what/
Completely portable and customizable and, I believe, exactly what you're looking for (just not free. heh)

Mojopac has some serious shortcomings, though:
- XP only (no Win9x, 2000, WINE under Linux ever. No Vista now)
- Admin logins only (no school, work, library, net cafe, or hotel business PCs)
- While you can install regular software into it, you must buy additional licenses of said software... unless you don't mind running software illegally
- Some software can't legally be run inside a virtual machine
- Major version upgrades cost additional $
- No backup utility
- 70MB footprint
- Not recommended from flash drives due to slow performance (their EULA actually forbid you from benchmarking which speaks volumes)
there is erd commander 2003 but it is as well not free.
I would love to have a portable xp desktop aswell too. Those app launchers/alternative shells and live cds are not really an replacement for your home desktop, just an alternative.
Thanks, John. Many things I didn't know about it... Now I know I want to stick with something else. lol
My uncle was running it from a 100 gig external USB HDD... and most of the software on there was probably of questionable legality.
I didn't know that "Some software can't legally be run inside a virtual machine"..... Is that intended to keep multiple people from running one licensed program through a terminal server or something?
Thanks again.

I agree with the portable virtual admin and portable virtual xp user.
