I'm almost there...

Well, I'm actually almost portable-app independent. I think three things that would be great are a file browser (Firefox isn't that great about folders), text editor (like Notepad...but more like Kate), and a terminal emulator (I've seen a lot of people request this: it seems like it would be hard to do, translating from DOS to BASH or typing drives).

Actually,

For the text editor, why not use SciTE Portable? Which I am hopinf John will make an official release of soon as it seems to work great.

Don't forget vim

One of the two greatest editors ever has a portable version:
gvim Portable
(The other being emacs, of course).

For those who don't know them: Be warned! They are VERY powerful, but almost as hard to use as powerful.

Concerning Notepad++,

Is it portable, though? On the site it doesn't say it is?

Yes..

It is portable right out of the box, I bleive you can download a zip with the files, so no install needed.

Never tried it.

I must confess I've never tried Notepad++, but I've just read their home page and I did find ONE feature that vim doesn't offer. (It's hard to imagine zooming in a console).
Believe it or not, it's the first time that happens with an editor other than emacs, so I just might give it a try, but still I must tell you I'm VERY skeptical about it being as powerful as vim or emacs. And I'm sure it won't be as ubiquitous as vi...
