not as bad as a large speaker magnet sitting in the drawer right below a CRT monitor. The colors looked cool thought. At least it was a school computer.

Technology can solve all our problems, like using a laptop for a space heater in a cold tent in the middle of winter.

Nice.

Don't most CRT monitors have a degaussing coil built in, though? So all you have to do is move the magnet, degauss the monitor, and all will be well again. Of course, that's assuming the magnet wasn't SO powerful as to permanantly magnetize the monitor. That could be a problem.

One of the buildings at our U has an experimental toroidal plasma TOCAMAC nuclear thingy (you can tell I'm not a nuclear engineer) in the basement. It's powered by a bank of capacitors that's about the size of a delivery van. Right above, on the first floor, there are offices.
The students aren't allowed to fire the thing off during regular hours because of the magnetic fields it creates. A few faculty (especially some who work right above the TOCAMAC) would show up in the morning every so often and find that their CRT screens are, shall we say, nonfunctional. Needless to say, they were the first to switch to LCD screens as soon as they came out.
Turns out one of the people who worked right above the nuclear donut was there late one evening (he's one of these guys who sleep maybe three hours a night) when the students fired the TOCAMAC. I don't remember the details, but I gather it was pretty scary.
How nobody has lost data yet, I can't tell you. They should have a long time ago. But anyhow, there's a large-scale magnet on a large-scale refrigerator holding a large-scale floppy disk to it. Whoo-hoo.

I think I know a few people that might do that...

best one that happened to me was when someone stapled the label to the disk as they had run out of proper self adhesive ones.

I once was told this story (from a few years back) about a company where they came to need their backup copies one day.
Luckily, every day the secretary made a copy of all important data on 5 1/4 inch floppies (told you: years back), so they had not only one, but quite a few different backups to restore in case one was bad, all of them very tidily kept and with autoadhesive labels with the date typed on them.
When ALL of the backups failed to restore, they asked the secretary how she was doing them. But the process she described was flawless, so they couldn't figure what was wrong.
Finally they had her do all the process right in front of them, and saw her make a perfect backup, tidily stick the label on the disk, and then put it into the typewriter to type the date on it!!!!
thats tooooo bad!
