secure file delete

I looked through the forums and searched the site but could not find any obvious mention of a secure file delete portable app. If it hasn't already been requested or isn't currently in development I would like to formally request it. If it has been requested or is in development then I would like to voice my support for this effort.

I have been using Simple File Shredder by scar5 software on my USB flash drive but I am not married to it. I do not know if it is 100% portable but it works for my purposes.

Working on one / Portable caveats

I'm working on one that will be an official release here.

There are some caveats, though. Unlike a hard drive, flash drives use wear leveling to increase life... so you can't overwrite a file with the usual stuff that a secure file deletion utility does. In theory, wiping all free space may handle it, but it will be rather slow.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

thanks

I'm glad to read you're looking into it. I'm not so much concerned about deleting content off the USB flash drive as I am about using a portable app to delete content of a local workstation hard drive. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Eraser 5.82

What about Eraser v5.82? Eraser is Free software and its source code is released under GNU General Public License.

http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/

I've used it in the past and have it loaded on my USB stick. It seems to work in a "portable" way without having to be installed on the local machine.

How about wrapping that in the PA installer?

Well...

Someone whose name starts with John, ends with Haller and has a middle initial of T may be going to do it.

I'm having difficulty

I'm having difficulty locating where "Portable Secure Deleter" by MiKiCuN is maintained. I've seen references to Secure Deleter 2007 but no URL to where the software is hosted/maintained. Do you happen to have a URL handy?

Ilegal

That's because it's illegal software. And no, you can't link to warez here. This site is for legitimate software.

I had no idea it was illegal

I had no idea it was illegal software and I have no intention of encouraging the use of warez. I was merely trying to find out more information to add to my research. I meant no harm.

DeepDelete r3

I use a program called DeepDelete r3, it's completely portable, made by PhoenixLabs (formerly MethLabs) but it's been discontinued and deleted because it was lost when the author lost his source code.

I managed to keep a copy of the program. Smile I just need to know how to put it on the PortableApps p-start menu.

Shredding is bad for flash memory.

I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned before in this thread.

The most common use would be

The most common use would be to shred files on local hard disks not flash memory.

I'm surprised you haven't noticed that it already has.

Eraser 5.82 Launcher

I made one for this a few days ago using PAT 1.4. I had looked at other launchers, but they were all *just about* working. As far as I can tell, the one I did gets all the reg keys. Just don't tell the program to start with or integrate into windows in the options menus.

If anyone's interested, email at wraithdu AT gmail DOT com.

I also wrote a couple batch files that will delete any number of files and folders that are drag-and-dropped onto the starter bat file, using eraserl.exe. No messing around with a loader, and only creates the "HKCU\Software\Heidi Computers Ltd" reg key, easily deleted with the bat file when finished.
