Well, it's gotten to the point where I am running out of space on my 2gig cruzer flash drive. I either want to buy an 8gig flash drive or one of the small portable hard drives that I've been seeing around.
What device is faster? At what point of RPM does a hard drive meet the speed of a flash drive?
Which will last longer? I assume that flash drives can get thrown around a little more, but when treated fairly gently, will a hard drive last longer than a flash drive?
Not sure which will last longer, given very gentle treatment, but I have yet to find an 8G Flash drive that will run PFF without horrible delays, even with a very minimal profile (no extensions, just bookmarks). If anyone knows of one out there, I'd love to hear about it.

1" Hard Drives run at 3600 RPM
1.8" hard drives run at 5400 RPM
2.5" (Laptop) Hard Drives run at 5400 or 7200 RPM
3.5" (Desktop) Hard Drives run at 5400 or 7200 or 10000 RPM
5400 RPM or faster will give you better speed than a flash drive.
3600 RPM will be slower than most flash drives.
Technically a hard drive will last longer than a flash drive, although with the wear leveling that pretty much all flash drives use, you should be ready to upgrade to a bigger drive before you run into problems. 3-4 years of regular use shouldn't be a problem with most flash drives.
If your going to buy a flash drive, spend the few extra bucks and get one of the faster ones. I recommend the Corsair Flash Voyager GT.

I have the 6gb WD Pocket Drive.
It's a 1" Hard Drive that runs at 3600. I don't find it slow at all. I run everything from it, including PFF and PTB (as my primary email client). I don't synch PTB with a home computer, I just always run it off my USB drive.
I figured the HD would stand a little more read/writing with daily PTB use than a Flash Drive. I could be wrong, but it has worked well for me.
I've had one for going on 2 years now. Works great.

I goofed.
1.8" are 4200 RPM
2.5" are 4200 or 5400 or 7200 RPM
I can't speak for the WD, but I tried the Seagate and the Memorex "Pocket Drives" and found them both to be noticeably slower than my flash drive.
