I need a USB menu... I don't really like PAM, as it's not customizable enough amongst other reasons, PStart gives me a warning every time I open the program on a different computer and the data becomes corrupted.. and ASuite works, but when I put the folder onto my flash drive and run it, it doesn't work (same whenever I install it directly to the flash drive)... I was happy with PStart until it started malfunctioning...and ASuite looked nice until it didn't work ..:(

There's a USB menu called 8-Start at http://www.8start.com/ there are lots of different skins available and other customization tools. I havent actually used it yet, but i've heard its good and really customizable

I meant customizable as in folders, groups, etc.. but I'll give it a try.
Asuite is an open-source project that functions like PStart

He already tried ASuite, he said that it didnt work from his drive

For some reason ASuite works now... thanks anyway.![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
Squirrelly little app, that Pstart, eh?..
I had the same problems with the "corrupted" files warnings. What a pain.
That's what caused me to switch to ASuite 1.4. The main prob I have w/ Asuite is that it launches kinda slowly on other PCs (works w/ reasonable speed on my *own* system, tho'...).

I wouldn't recommend PStart either. It ruined my external hard drive.

looks as if it's supposed to be used on a desktop. Although cleaning up the mess that is Windows can be a good idea.
I'd like to know if anyone has used this program and how well it works.

Qsel is small, fast and reliable. And it has categories, something no other starter prog has (to my knowledge). Much better than folders and subfolders, if you have loads of entries.
I have presented it here: https://portableapps.com/node/6048

Always on the move - love all portable apps!
why are we directing people AWAY from PA.com?
(even thogh its nice and all to sugest that PAM might not workon all flash drives.)

because we would rather have them find something they like using than try to force them to use nothing but apps or launchers from PA.com

to point out the fact that pam might not work on al flash drives and that it would be nice to point out something that works for them.( if you had read my edited post you would have already known that.)

I just downloaded Qsel and it looks quite nice.
If I want it to Autostart do I make the Autorun.inf file read:
[autorun]
OPEN=Qsel.exe
ICON=Qsel.exe
ACTION = Usb-Menu

No, PAM works, I just don't really like the interface (it's too big for Covert Ops at schoool :P), I doesn't have custom categories and folders, and when I add OperaUSB on it, it doesn't show up.
I'm happy with ASuite. Except I can't find an auto-run function thing :(.
You might want to go into the menu and it should be under configurations or something like that I can't be for sure as I don't have asuit on my computer right now but I do on my laptop

The autorun is in the advanced properties for each "link"

There's a little bit of a learning curve, but here are the things I've been able to do with it:
It works great on a USB drive, and you can even add it to your PAM as a secondary menu. I do that, and leave my really commonly used files in PAM, and I can put all those other files into 8Start. That way, I can retain the folders and backup functions of PAM and have the flexibility of 8Start.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
I can't figure out how to link my programs to it like I did with P Start, btw, what happened to P Start? Was it pulled from this website? I can't find it anymore.
Most of 8StartLauncher is straightforward but linking some files can take a bit of thought. Here is an image showing how to link an HTML page so it becomes a 8StartMenu choice. (Can't seem to show an embedded images so this link will pop open a new window or tab).
Configuring a Link in 8Start Launcher
Because this is an HTML file, I've used FirefoxPortable as the "Target" and then used the actual file name (SciTEFAQ.html) in the "Command Line Parameters". I've also included the path (relative) to the file SciTEFAQ.html in the "Start In" field.
Most often to create a link in 8Start, I will first create a shortcut, "add" that into 8Start after selecting the "move" radio button. To add a folder you have to navigate and select the folder and then select the "folder" radio button before you "Add".
Why 8StartLauncher instead of Portable Apps Menu (PAM)?
First Portable Apps Menu is great in that it finds and adds everything automatically. No user intervention seemed to be required.
However, that can be a disadvantage if you don't want links to all the "*.exe" files showing up in PAM. Also there didn't seem to be any way to add links to other non-exe type files. With 8Start Launcher you have complete control over what programs show up. You can grop programs together, add folders, and run programs with other target files as in the example above.
If you're looking for a covert launcher I'd suggest typeandrun. You can shut off the systray icon, and use a hotkey to pull up the launcher. You set keywords to launch the software you want to use.

I use it in conjunction with Cafe, which I use to manage file associations.
http://www.portablefreeware.com/?q=cafe&m=Search
and ustart, which I use as a start menu
http://www.portablefreeware.com/?q=ustart&m=Search
if using covertly I'd also suggest shutting of the launch sounds.
I'm currently looking for some portable app that can hide icons from the notification area(systray), some apps have this feature built in, others do not. I've tried traysaver, but it has some difficulty along with modifying the registry.
Since you use CAFE, take a look at my mod of CAFE. It's in the beta testing forums at this site. let me know what you think of it by posting in that section.

On Pstart you can configure to hide ST icons...
